REMOTE Project
REMOTE hopes to change the way people think about the world's marginalized populations by sculpting the next generation of entrepreneurs.
REMOTE (Reintegration, Education, Mentoring, Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship) is focused on the entrepreneurial education of three marginalized populations: incarcerated persons, persons transitioning out of prison, and persons transitioning out of homelessness. The financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs of REMOTE will provide a significant reduction in the recidivism rate and will build future leaders that not only makes it unique in the market place, but addresses worrisome social needs.
A Northeastern University student founded the organization in January 2013. REMOTE is a combination of three unique concepts that strives to solve the issues facing the U.S. prison system. Many organizations teach entrepreneurship or create accelerator programs or provide microloans, but only REMOTE puts them all together. REMOTE has built partnerships with "Haley House" and "reweave".
REMOTE is currently looking for MBA students to teach entrepreneurial courses.

Faculty Updates
Small Business: Family Businesses
It is likely that if you are a part of a family owned and operated business, than you may have had less trouble with the economic downturn than your non-family owned colleagues. Justin Craig, professor of entrepreneurship at Northeastern's D'Amore-McKim School of Business, has recently founded research that gives evidence that a family business is more likely to succeed to sustain during a financial crisis on an international basis. His research provided backing that the members of a family business are more motivated and more aligned with the overall business objectives in a comprehensive way than those in non-family business. There is a greater goal which comes from a 'stewardship theoretical lens', which Dr. Craig proposes as a reason why managing family members can be more productive and community oriented. It seems that family members stick together and succeed in all kinds of crisis, and that works well for their businesses. The New Zealand Herald, Apr 26, 2013
J.C. Penney borrows $850 million to boost inventory
J.C. Penney is borrowing money. Sign of financial trouble? Possibly, but it might be the right tactic at the right time. The money is available now, comments Harlan Platt, finance professor at D'Amore-McKim School of Business. "If they had not drawn down the money, it would have come down on its own; they would have lost the availability," says Platt. "You always want to stock up while it's there." So while J.C. Penney may be having some trouble with its competitive advantage over Kohl's Corp and Macy's, this withdrawal of usable funds may be the best advantage for the present moment. Reuters, Apr 15, 2013
