October 19 Alcoa, TN 0.5 CEUs
This workshop, led by Rev. Dr. Paul Harmon, Spartanburg, SC District Superintendent, will be a gathering of those who rely on and value words to help people connect to the Living Word. During our time together, we will focus on preaching possibilities for the Advent journey, exploring both lectionary and non-lectionary options for helping people live toward the joy of Christmas. We will talk about the practical aspects of sermon preparation that help real faith connect with real life. 0.5 CEUs
SEJ ClergyWomen's Consultation
October 26 - 29 St. Simon's Island 1.2 CEUs Ministry can be wild, wonderful, life-giving...and draining. At times, it's a sieve through which the water of our baptism slowly drips, leaving our souls parched, cracked, and creaky. Ministry can be wild, wonderful, life-giving...and draining. At times, it's a sieve through which the water of our baptism slowly drips, leaving our souls parched, cracked, and creaky. It's time to plug the drain. CLERGY NOTES: Two notes on "access"...
To log in to the Holston website and check your CEUs, you must use the user ID that is your clergy number preceded by your last name initial. Some of you have created other logins. You will not be able to access your reports that way, since the records are associated with your clergy ID. You can change your password any time, but please only use the initial and your 4-digit clergy ID number as your user ID. If you don't remember your ID, you can click on "forgot password" on the login page, and the ID will be sent you as well as a password reset.
On MissionInsite, you need to use one log-in ID only (your choice of ID). If you have a multi-point charge, register under one church name and then send me an email to add the additional churches. When you log in to run reports, the system will ask you to choose which church to report on. If you use multiple logins, I can't give you PeoplePlot administrator privileges.
Please call or email if you have any questions regarding the above information. (865-293-4135 or sueweber@holston.org)

How to Take Your Sermons from Stuck to Stellar
by Ben Crawshaw from "The Rocket Company
One of the sayings we have here at the Rocket Company is that "sermons aren't really written so much as they're birthed." The process is often difficult and painful, but is rewarding in the end. And, we understand that every pastor has a personal process they use to plan, write, and preach their sermons each week.
Here are four steps to Biblical sermon preparation that will hopefully help you this week.
Step 1: READ THE TEXT:
If you're preaching through passages of the Bible in sequential order, you already know where you're going.
If however, you're doing a topical series, prayerfully choose a main passage.
After you've decided on a passage:
a. Read the text out loud.
b. Read the text from multiple versions.
c. Summarize the text in your own words.
d. Read the text IN CONTEXT (this is HUGE and often neglected).
For example, loads of pastors and worship leaders have referenced Matthew 18:15-20 ("...where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them" ESV) in a corporate worship setting to talk about how the presence of God is with people as they worship or study.
But, in reality, this verse is all about church discipline.
Remember, CONTEXT MATTERS.
e. Outline the text.
STEP 2: UNDERSTAND THE TEXT
Once you've gone through the components in step 1, it's time to move from reading the text to studying the text.
This is where hermeneutics - the science of interpreting the Bible-comes into play.
STEP 3: USE OTHER RESOURCES
It's never a good idea to start preparing your sermons with other sources, but it's okay at this stage in the process to use other tools (books, commentaries, online study tools...etc).
STEP 4: INTERNALIZE THE TEXT
It's time to preach the sermon...but not to your congregation yet!
Sometimes before you preach a sermon to other people, God wants to preach it to you first.
Ben Crawshaw is the Creative Director of High School Ministry at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, GA. In addition to speaking and writing, Ben plans services and events.

.THIS MONTH'S FEATURED BOOK/VIDEO
(Remember, each book related to ministry qualifies for 0.3 CEUs, and 3 books = 1 full CEU. Submit name, author, publisher and date, and a brief review for continuing ed credit.)
In a culture marked by what many call "attention-deficit disorder," congregations and their leaders are subject to distractions that detract from their mission and lead them in directions that have little to do with their reason for existence. Size concerns, building preservation, situational conflicts, the lure of technology, and the so-called worship wars all threaten to distract congregations from what matters most. Thus, churches can become part of the problem rather than a positive influence in the lives of their people and their communities.
In this inspiring volume, Gary Peluso-Verdend issues a clarion call to congregational leaders to refocus their church's attention on the core matters of Christian faith-the Word, the example of Christ, and an intentional embrace of theology and spiritual practice-to renew the congregation's vision and to center itself again on God's call.
Paying Attention takes on obsession and anxiety, the two "vampires of attention," that focus on the unfixable past and the uncontrollable future, wasting and dissipating attention. True Christian attention is focused on the now, and this book calls on congregations to be present to the persons and issues that God has entrusted to them. As Jesus of Nazareth's ability to be fully attentive and present to people was remarkable, congregations should look to his example and attend as he attended. Paying Attention urges congregations to develop their theology of attention and to engage in the Christian practice of attending lovingly to God and to neighbor so that they may participate fully in the kingdom of God.
With study questions at the end of each chapter and an imagined conversation between people practicing theology in their congregation, Paying Attention provides an invaluable companion in a congregation's journey toward purposeful, attentive faithfulness.
