BRING IN THE LAITY:  EXPANDING HORIZONS
FOR FRONTERA UNIDA
from Duane Alexander Miller (Christ Church, San Antonio)

What energizes a church? It is not only a well-educated and dynamic clergy but also an empowered and involved laity. Our third workshop sponsored jointly by Frontera Unida and the World Missions Department was designed with this in mind. Our first two workshops provided ongoing training and motivation for the clergy of northern Mexico. This time the clergy were encouraged to bring a couple of lay leaders from their parishes. Two of the pastors brought teams of four people, while a couple of others brought a spouse or family member. Unfortunately, a few of the pastors didn't bring anyone at all from their churches, and so their lay leaders were not able to benefit from the workshop.

This workshop was held in Matamoros allowing us to worship at the Church of the Ascension, one of the few parishes in the region (most congregations are of mission status). The workshop was held at a local hotel with conference rooms, which provided for a quiet and organized setting for the workshop. We were pleased to have in attendance the Bishop of Northern Mexico, Francisco Moreno, who is also the primate of the Anglican Church in Mexico.

The main sessions were held on Friday and Saturday. Topics addressed were gifts of the Holy Spirit, the importance of the Body (clergy and laity) working together, and tithing rather than almsgiving. Bishop Hector Monterroso of Costa Rica and Dr. Duane Miller held a panel on the global Anglican Communion for the clergy which was very well-received and lively. Dr. Marthe Curry's talk to the laity on using their gifts in the church was a high point for many of them.

We hope to continue with this focus on the laity. Due to the enthusiasm of the attending lay leaders, we are confident that next time clergy will be bringing more laity. We are already discussing topics for the next workshop, and the evaluations handed in by everyone were very positive and clearly indicated that including more lay people is the right direction for these workshops.

WHY I GO:  from David Chalk (St. Francis's, Canyon Lake)

Mission is so life affirming because it doesn't transform me as much as it helps put me in touch with who and what the Lord made me to be and do in the first place.
The Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders is hosting their annual Short-Term Mission Leaders' Training November 13-15, 2015 in the SAMS office in Ambridge, PA.We train team leaders how to train their team.  Leaders will leave SAMS confident in their ability to recruit, train, serve overseas, and get their team members home. The cost, including food is $99.00.  Please follow the link for more information and to register.http://samsusa.org/content/leader-training-dates-and-locations.

WHY I GIVE:  from Lisa Snedeker (Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi)

I support the World Mission Department because I believe we are called to send God's hope and love out into the world, and I love how the Episcopal church is doing this!  And I will always be grateful for the experiences each of my daughters received on their many mission trips.

WHY I PRAY: from Mary K. and Chitt Chittenden (St. Francis's, Canyon Lake)

We have been on mission trips to Honduras with the Manos de Dios team for several years and have always felt peace, knowing that we were being prayed for daily.  This year was the first time
that we were not able to make the trip, so knowing how important pray-er warriors are, we did not hesitate to get involved.  We are very happy to support World Missions through prayer.

DID YOU KNOW...

There are THREE components to world mission:  GOING, GIVING, PRAYING.

You know about GOING AND GIVING, but did you know that Virtual Mission is a group of PRAY-ERS who participate in team trips by attending team meetings, reading the team devotional books, staying connected with the team as they go, and PRAYING daily for the team?  If you'd like to be part of Virtual Mission, contact Libby Templeton for more information ([email protected]).
