June 7, 2016
It's starting to feel like summer, and we hope you're enjoying the beautiful weather as much as we are!

While some members of our community are away for the next couple months, many are still in New Haven -- so we're going to try something new and continue gathering for Humanist Haven over the summer this year!

As previously announced, please mark your calendars for the second Sundays of the month this summer (June 12, July 10, and August 14) and stay tuned for details about our July and August speakers.

We hope you'll join us this Sunday, June 12 at 1 PM at The Grove as we kick off our Humanist Haven summer series with a talk from our very own Wendy Webber -- who will soon be leaving our community to go work for the Humanist Service Corps -- on the value of service. Please join us in hearing her thoughts, reflecting together on the meaning of service, and thanking Wendy for all she's given to our community.

Read on for more information about her talk, as well as the activity we're hosting at this weekend's International Festival of Arts & Ideas! We hope to see you at one (or both!) of these events.

Best,
Chris Stedman, Executive Director
Humanist Haven features Wendy Webber on 6/12.

Most religious and ethical traditions extol the virtue of service. But too often, groups and individuals jump into service without much reflection about why they're serving, or what are the most effective ways to serve. Wendy Webber will discuss the work she will be doing for the next year in Ghana with women accused of witchcraft. She will also explore the purpose of service and explain why you don't have to pack up your bags and move to Ghana to make a difference. Humanist Haven is YHC's community gathering where people from all across Yale and New Haven come together to ask big questions, explore what gives our lives meaning and purpose, and act to make the world a better place. Over the summer, Humanist Haven meets on the second Sunday of each month. Join us at The Grove -- 760 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT -- on the second Sunday of June (6/12) at 1 PM for Humanist Haven with Wendy Webber.

Wendy Webber is a graduate of Yale Divinity School, where she was a founder of an atheist, agnostic, and multifaith community that continues to foster interfaith/belief dialogues and initiatives on campus. She spent a year with Pathfinders Project, an international humanist service project designed to find the location to start the permanent Humanist Service Corps. Wendy serves as Yale Humanist Community's Volunteer Coordinator, works for Foundation Beyond Belief, and writes about religion, atheism, and interbelief engagement primarily for her blog (interbelief.com), State of Formation, and Applied Sentience. When she is able, she plays tennis, takes photos, and enjoys offbeat museums.
Help us lead a community art activity for children this Saturday (6/11)!

At a number of arts events throughout New Haven over the last few weeks, YHC has sponsored children's craft activities -- and we've received an incredibly enthusiastic response at each event. These activities are in celebration of the Green Light Project -- and we need your help with our next activity this Saturday, June 11 from 1 to 5:30 PM at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas on the New Haven Green. This is an activity that people of all skill levels and artistic abilities can participate in!

Please e-mail Nancy at nancykelly.yhc@gmail.com if you are available -- even if you can only be there for part of the activity. Many thanks!
