May 11, 2016
A couple days ago, we announced that we're extending our Green Light Project campaign
by two weeks -- and tonight we're ready to celebrate. Join us at 5:30 PM at BAR for food, drinks, and information about how you can help us create a new sculpture for our community. And even if you can't join us at BAR, please consider donating $50 or more today -- if you do so, your contribution will be matched by a matching donor (until they hit their individual limits).

Then, this Sunday, we'll host our final Humanist Haven of the academic year. Author Kaya Oakes will discuss building community outside of religion, and we'll hear a number of reflections from YHC members about what this community has meant to them this year. We hope to see you there!

Read on for more information about these events and our other upcoming programs, including some information about our plans for the summer (with more to come). We hope to see you tonight, this Sunday, or at another event soon!

Best,
Chris Stedman, Executive Director
Humanist Haven welcomes Kaya Oakes on 5/15.

Institutional religions may offer individuals a framework for community -- building and finding inspiration -- but they often fail to meet us as we arrive, with all of our doubts and questions. How can we connect with others, find purpose, and change society outside of a religious framework without simply reacting against religion? Bringing our 2015-16 Humanist Haven speaker series to a close, author Kaya Oakes and members of the YHC community will lead a gathering where we will reflect on these questions, share examples, and most importantly, share stories from our own lives. Click here to RSVP to the event on Facebook or click here to RSVP on Meetup.

Humanist Haven is YHC's community gathering where people from all across Yale and New Haven come together to ask big questions, explore what gives our lives meaning and purpose, and act to make the world a better place. Join us at The Grove -- 760 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT -- on the third Sunday of May (5/15) at 1 PM for Humanist Haven with Kaya Oakes.

Humanist Haven meets on the first and third Sunday of each month; meetings are free and open to the public, with child activities offered on the first Sunday of the month. Want to join a group walking over from campus? A group of students will leave Phelps Gate at 12:45 PM to walk to The Grove.

Kaya Oakes is the author of four books, most recently including The Nones Are Alright: A New Generation of Believers, Seekers, and Those In Between. She teaches writing at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also a contributing writer at Religion Dispatches, America, Commonweal, and many other publications, and a contributing editor and writer at Killing the Buddha, "a religion magazine for those made anxious by churches."
Tonight (Wednesday): Celebrate GLP at BAR and double your donation!
Don't miss GLP's extension celebration tonight (5/11)

Join us at BAR (254 Crown Street, New Haven, CT) -- one of New Haven's most popular bars and restaurants -- beginning at 5:30 PM tonight (Wednesday, May 11) for our Green Light Project campaign extension celebration. We'll celebrate the campaign with pizza, happy hour specials, fellowship, and updates on how the Green Light Project campaign is progressing!

RSVP on Facebook or Meetup and invite your friends. Again, if you donate $50 or more on the day of this event, your contribution will be matched by one of our matching donors (until our donors hit their individual limits) -- though all gifts, big or small, are hugely appreciated today!
Help us bring the GLP campaign to a close at our party on 5/26!
Join us at 101 Threads for food, fun, and fellowship.

The Green Light Project closing celebration is happening at 7 PM on Thursday, May 26 at community art gallery 101 Art Threads (118 Court Street, New Haven, CT). Join us as we count down to the end of the campaign, thank everyone for their support, and enjoy drinks, art, and delicious eats from local food trucks.

RSVP on Facebook or Meetup and spread the word!
Do you like art? Help us lead a community art activity for children!

At a number of arts events throughout New Haven in the upcoming weeks, YHC is sponsoring children's craft activities. These activities are in celebration of the Green Light Project -- to help us spread the word about this amazing sculpture, as well as create an opportunity for a diverse Greater New Haven community to meet and appreciate YHC face-to-face.

Artist Aly Jones has designed a printmaking project for each child to create and take home. We hope to have a number of volunteers for each event to make it comfortable for people to take breaks and to accommodate any "rushes" that might occur. The dates, times, locations, and estimated number of children are below. You do not need to come to all events and we appreciate any time you can share!

Celebrate the Hill
Saturday, May 28, 1p - 5p, Trowbridge Square Park

Needs of New Haven: Learning with Future Project

Earlier this month, our Needs of New Haven discussion group met with representatives from The Future Project, a national nonprofit that works with high school students to imagine, plan, and complete personal passion projects. The New Haven branch of TFP works with four local schools. An alumnus led our group through an abbreviated version of the project so that we could experience firsthand what it is like to draft a project of personal importance. TFP is more than mere planning; part of the program saw us take actionable steps relating to our projects, such as locating an online resource or identifying and reaching out to a potential contact.

TFP is looking for volunteers to assist with an end of the year event on June 4. Students will be discussing the projects they completed, while supportive volunteers will ask constructive and questions to motivate discussion and get students thinking about what they can and will do next. If you are interested in helping out, please email yalehumanists@gmail.com.

Thank you to all who attended our Needs of New Haven meetings throughout its inaugural academic year! Through this program, we were able to forge new community ties and learn how we might become responsible New Havenites. Please stay tuned for information on our next guests after the summer break!

Needs of New Haven is just one of our discussion groups, which meet on the first, second, third, and fourth Mondays of the month. Visit the Discussion Groups page on our website to learn more about each group and how you can get involved.
