April 27, 2016
As we continue a month of concentrated community events surrounding the Green Light Project crowdfunding campaign, I've been thrilled to encounter a great deal of enthusiasm for the project. But beyond that, I've been heartened by the kindness of people who have reached out or come up to us in person and encouraged us. Sometimes, a little kindness can go a long way.

This Sunday, Dr. Kenneth Morford will join us at Humanist Haven to discuss the importance of kindness. We hope to see you there!

And don't miss a special event tonight where you will have an opportunity to engage with Green Light Project artist Ted Salmon, to hear his vision for the project and share your thoughts on community and our shared humanity. Your contributions could help shape what the sculpture becomes!

Read on for more information about these events and our other upcoming programs, including a number of community events for our Green Light Project. We hope to see you this Sunday or at another event soon!

Best,
Chris Stedman, Executive Director
Humanist Haven welcomes Kenneth Morford on 5/1.

In Japan, the crane is not just a beautiful bird but a mythical creature reputed to live a thousand years and bring good fortune. According to Japanese tradition, anyone with the patience and commitment to fold 1,000 paper cranes will be granted their wish --most often, one of recovery from serious illness. Dr. Kenneth Morford will share a story of making 1,000 paper cranes for a young woman with leukemia and its impact on the way he communicates and connects with patients and their families. Click here to RSVP to the event on Facebook or click here to RSVP on Meetup.

Humanist Haven is YHC's community gathering where people from all across Yale and New Haven come together to ask big questions, explore what gives our lives meaning and purpose, and act to make the world a better place. Join us at The Grove -- 760 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT -- on the first Sunday of May (5/1) at 1 PM for Humanist Haven with Kenneth Morford.

Humanist Haven meets on the first and third Sunday of each month; meetings are free and open to the public, with child activities offered on the first Sunday of the month. Want to join a group walking over from campus? A group of students will leave Phelps Gate at 12:45 PM to walk to The Grove.

Kenneth Morford, MD is a rising Chief Resident in the Yale Primary Care Program. A citizen of the world, he grew up in Japan, Korea, France, and the United States. He studied art and neuroscience before finding a career in internal medicine. His academic interests include addiction treatment, patient-provider relationships, and complementary medicine. Personal interests include traveling to new places, growing a sustainable indoor garden, and cooking for family and friends.
Tonight (Wednesday): A talk by the GLP artist at the New Haven Museum!
Don't miss an evening with the artist tonight (4/25)

Green Light Project Artist Talk
Wednesday, April 27 at 7 PM
New Haven Museum and Historical Society
114 Whitney Avenue, New Haven, CT
RSVP on Facebook or Meetup

Join us for a conversation with Greater New Haven area artist Edwin "Ted" Salmon about his plans for a new nonreligious
sculpture symbolizing the importance of community and the hope of the human spirit, intended to go up alongside the religious symbols displayed on the New Haven Green each winter. Learn about his concept for a sculpture and time capsule to be opened on the 500th anniversary of New Haven, and find out how you can get involved. The event will begin with a reception at 7 PM, followed by a talk and Q&A with the artist at 7:30 PM.
Do you like art? Help us lead a community art activity for children!

Before our Green Light Project campaign ends, join us at ArtWalk on May 6 and 7, where we'll be leading an art activity for kids and sharing information about our Green Light Project!

At ArtWalk and a number of other upcoming arts events throughout New Haven in the upcoming weeks, YHC is sponsoring children's craft activities. These activities are in celebration of the Green Light Project -- to help us spread the word about this amazing sculpture, as well as create an opportunity for a diverse Greater New Haven community to meet and appreciate YHC face-to-face.

Artist Aly Jones has designed a printmaking project for each child to create and take home. She will be able to attend the first event to train volunteers, and the last (largest) event. We hope to have four volunteers for each event to make it comfortable for people to take breaks and to accommodate any "rushes" that might occur. The dates, times, locations and estimated number of children are below. You do not need to come to all events and we appreciate any time you can share!

Third meeting of YHC Membership Team on 5/15

Want to help shape this community? We want you for our Membership Team! Join us on Sunday, May 15 at 3 PM (after Humanist Haven) for the third meeting for YHC's Membership Team.

This team, made up of community members, will work on enhancing the experience of current YHC members and reaching out to new ones. Focus areas will include serving families with children, expanding our young adult and graduate student program, supporting our undergraduate community, and shaping the Humanist Haven experience. If you're interested in learning more, we hope to see you on May 15!
Green Light Project campaign runs through 5/11!

The Green Light Project is our initiative to create an interactive sculpture and time capsule to be displayed on the New Haven Green... but it will only happen if you get involved!

We're currently running an IndieGOGO campaign (through May 11) to raise the funds to pay for this ambitious work of art and time capsule. Your financial help -- anything you can contribute -- is crucial. Without support
from people all across the community and beyond, this project won't happen. Please help us bring hope, warmth and light for all to the New Haven Green for years to come!

Various levels of contributions will include rewards such as pins, unveiling celebration Gala tickets, sculpture replicas, and more. And don't forget the time capsule! Your thoughts could be housed in the sculpture and shared with the Greater New Haven community in the year 2138 to celebrate its 500th anniversary as another work of art -- a mural.

Give your great-grandchildren a priceless gift . . .
contribute your words to the time capsule.

Learn more on our IndieGOGO page!
