January 2014

Happy New Year! Thanks to your support, we're able to hit the ground running in January -- our busiest month yet!

To start, we're kicking off 2015 by welcoming Olga Verbeek, a master's student at the University of Humanistic Studies in the Netherlands who arrives this week for a full time internship at YHC! Check out her introduction below to learn more about her and what she will be working on.

We're also finishing our move into a new, larger office in The Grove this week -- less than six months after moving into our first. Come visit us and check it out!

Soon, we'll welcome students back from break and host our first Humanist Haven of the new year; see below for details about this month's speaker and the full lineup of Spring 2015 speakers. And later this month, we'll relaunch our Practical Humanism Discussion Group and our Young Adult / Graduate Student / Professionals group. Finally, we'll prepare to welcome Joshua Greene in the first week of February.

Spring Speakers and January Humanist Haven!

We're thrilled to announce our Spring 2015 Humanist Haven speakers:

  • January 11: Tom Krattenmaker on what you might not know about evangelicals
  • February 8: Tony Pinn on his personal journey and Humanism in African American communities
  • March 8: Vanessa Zoltan on secular spirituality
  • April 12: Melanie Brewster and Chris Johnson on the diverse narratives of nonreligious people

Click here for details about all of these speakers, and be sure to follow our newsletter for updates on all of these events.

Our January speaker, Tom Krattenmaker, will address this question: What do you think when you hear the word evangelical? Krattenmaker, a self-described secular progressive, will discuss his interactions with and research on American evangelicals. Come learn about the surprising changes in evangelical America-and how the nonreligious might collaborate with some evangelicals in pursuit of the common good.

Tom Krattenmaker is a contributing columnist for USA Today specializing in religion in public life and author of the award-winning book The Evangelicals You Don't Know on the new evangelicals in post-Christian America. A secular progressive, he joined the Yale community this fall as the new communications director at Yale Divinity School.

What: Tom Krattenmaker on what you might not know about evangelicals
When: Sunday, January 11, 1 PM (with refreshments to follow)

Meet Olga Verbeek, YHC's new full time intern!

Please join us in offering a warm welcome to Olga Verbeek -- she will be spending the next four months working with YHC full time. Below is a personal introduction, written by Olga:

Hi all! I'm joining you at YHC this month, so I'd like to briefly introduce myself!

My name is Olga Verbeek and I am a second year master's student in Humanistic Studies in the beautiful city of Utrecht, the Netherlands. In this quite unique program, I study about questions like, 'How do people give meaning to life? How can we live valuable lives? How can we create a just society?' These questions don't have easy answers, but are nevertheless fundamental to our existing.

Furthermore, I'm very much interested in building a bridge between scientific and philosophical theories about these questions and the practice of our daily lives. That is one of the reasons bringing me to the Yale Humanist Community: I'm very excited about the mission to provide a community where people can find inspiration, reflection, and support.

Young adult group launches 2 new monthly events!

YHC's group for graduate students, professionals, and young adults is launching two new monthly events beginning this semester!

The first is a pub night, every third Friday of the month (the first will be Friday, January 16) at 8 PM at Firehouse 12. The other is a board game night, every first Sunday of the month at 6 PM starting in February. The board game night is BYOB, and we will order food when people arrive -- plan on contributing $5 if you are eating. For details, email Wendy Webber at wwebber@gmail.com.

Join YHC's new Community Life Committee!

It's a new year and with it we are announcing a new YHC committee: the Community Life Committee. Don't worry, we're not adding another commitment to your busy schedule. This committee is actually combining all of last semester's committees into one.

If you're interested in helping us plan community service events, invite speakers, educate the broader community about Humanism, or organize Humanist Haven, this committee is the one to come to. Help shape YHC!

The committee will still meet at The Grove (760 Chapel Street in New Haven) in the Conservatory room at 6:00 PM. But now it will only be the first Wednesday of every month, starting February 4. Click here to learn more and get involved.
Save the date: Joshua Greene speaking Feb. 5!

Save the date and stay tuned for location details for our event with Joshua Greene, author of Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them, on February 5 at 7 PM on campus at Yale! Greene is the John and Ruth Hazel Associate Professor of the Social Sciences and the director of the Moral Cognition Laboratory in the Department of Psychology, Harvard University.

"After two and a half millennia, it's rare to come across a genuinely new idea on the nature of morality, but in this book Joshua Greene advances not one but several... Moral Tribes is a landmark in our understanding of morality and the moral sense." -- Steven Pinker

Struggling with addiction?
Weekly YHC support group

Are you struggling with addictive behaviors? We host a weekly SMART Recovery support group meeting every Monday at 6:30 PM in the Conservatory room at The Grove. The goal of SMART, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, is to provide quality support and community for individuals struggling with addictive behaviors -- and a nontheistic alternative to twelve-step programs, which rely heavily on God and Christian theology. People of all faiths and beliefs are welcome to attend.
Weekly student dinners and lunches resume this month

Join Yale Atheists, Humanists,  and Agnostics for dinner every Thursday at 6 PM in Timothy Dwight College. And whether or not you can make dinner, you can always email us and sign up to meet with Chris for one-on-one counseling.

Graduate students: See left for details about our new monthly events. If you're at the Divinity School, don't miss the Open Party's weekly lunch meetings on Wednesdays at 12:30 PM! Email us for details.
