November 2014
In the busyness of fall, it's easy to move quickly from one responsibility to another -- starting the next task before you've even finished crossing the last one off of your to-do list. So during this busy season, we want to invite you to slow down and join us in reflecting on gratitude.

At YHC, we're grateful for all of you. Because of your ideas, enthusiasm, and participation, we're able to host a number of exciting events this month -- including a public discussion with some of the leading experts on atheism in the military, a celebration of the life of Cosmos creator Carl Sagan, and joint events with Luther House and the Yale University Chaplain's Office.

Read on for details, and get involved! We hope to see you soon.

With thanks,
Chris Stedman

Atheists in Foxholes: Special Event on Nov. 6!
Join the Yale Humanist Community a few days before Veterans Day for a discussion on the challenges facing atheist and Humanist servicemembers and how we can make the military a safer place for atheists and people of all beliefs and backgrounds.

What: "Atheists in Foxholes: Challenges and Changes for Humanists in the U.S. Military" with Jason Torpy and Jason Heap, and an introduction from Patrick Weil
When: Thursday, November 6, 7 PM
Where: Linsly-Chittenden Hall 101 (63 High Street, New Haven)
Who: Open to the public!
Humanist Haven: Come Celebrate Carl Sagan Day!

Are you looking to connect with others, find support, and participate in a community? Do you want a place where you can explore what makes for a meaningful life and how to help others along the way? We encourage you to join us on the second Sunday of each month for Humanist Haven, a nonreligious gathering to celebrate life's joys and reflect on its challenges, hosted in the Clubhouse at The Grove by YHC. This month, we'll be celebrating the life of Dr. Carl Sagan -- an agnostic astronomer and author who created the original Cosmos and, in the words of SETI's Dr. David Morrison , "inspired a generation of scientists."

What: Carl Sagan Day Celebration
When: Sunday, November 9, 1 PM (with refreshments to follow)
Where: Clubhouse at The Grove (760 Chapel St., New Haven)
Who: Open to the public!
Students: Secular Saints, Debating Death, and Gratitude

This Sunday, November 2, the Luther House student community will meet for their annual "All Saints Sunday" worship service and dinner -- and they've invited YHC students to join them. YHC students are welcome to come at 5 PM to see what their worship is like, or arrive at 6 PM for dinner and dialogue. Over dinner, we'll have a chance to get to know one another and talk about the concept of saints -- and the variety of ways people of different cultures and understandings honor those who inspire us to serve others.

Yale AHA will also be cosponsoring the talkback on Wendesday, November 12 following the Veritas Forum in Battel Chapel with N.T. Wright and Shelly Kagan on "Living Well in Light of Death: Two Views on Life Before (and After?) the Inevitable." The event is at 7 PM, with breakout discussions in Calhoun afterwards. Students need to reserve a ticket to attend; If you want more information about it, click here. Additionally, please join Yale AHA every Thursday at 6 PM in Timothy Dwight College for weekly dinner. And whether or not you can make dinner, you can always email us and sign up to meet with Chris for one-on-one counseling

Graduate students: Our next Professionals/Grad Students meeting is on Wednesday, November 19 at 6 PM at the Yale Chaplain's Office (Bingham Hall entryway D, lower level), where you're invited to share a meal and interfaith conversation about gratitude and giving thanks. Sharing stories from our lives and traditions, we'll explore the shape and nuances of gratitude -- what it looks like, feels like, sounds like. We'll discuss where gratitude comes from and whether it leads us to act in particular ways. No special expertise necessary; just come ready for good company and conversation. Please RSVP for this dinner here. And if you're at the Divinity School, don't miss the Open Party's weekly lunch meetings on Wednesdays at 12:30 PM! Email us for details.
Struggling with addiction? Weekly YHC Support Group
Are you struggling with addictive behaviors? We host a weekly SMART Recovery support group meeting every Monday at 6:30 PM in the Conservatory room at The Grove. The goal of SMART, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, is to provide quality support and community for individuals struggling with addictive behaviors -- and a nontheistic alternative to twelve-step programs, which rely heavily on God and Christian theology. People of all faiths and beliefs are welcome to attend.
Want to Build Community? Join a YHC Committee!

Want to help plan events and programs? YHC's committees, made up of community members, help us come up with ideas and plan educational, service, and social events. What do you want out of your Humanist community? We encourage you to participate in our committees and help build the kind of community you want! Committees meet on Wednesday evenings at 6 PM in the Conservatory at The Groveclick here to learn more and get involved. And don't miss the Practical Humanism Discussion Group, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 PM in the Conservatory at The Grove.
