October 2014
How will you help others this month?

Last month, nearly 50 people came out for Yale Humanist Community's very first Humanist Haven, where Dr. Laurie Santos offered tips for a better life. My favorite part of the afternoon was seeing people meet, connect, reflect, and offer to help one another through life's challenges.

Helping other people is central to building our community. As the Humanist Manifesto III--which we'll be discussing tomorrow (October 8) at our first Practical Humanism Discussion Group meeting--says, "life's fulfillment emerges from individual participation in the service of humane ideals."

This month, YHC is offering a number of opportunities to act and reflect on the value of service to others. We're launching a bi-monthly service and dialogue series, hosting speakers on Humanist service work, gearing up for an event on atheist and Humanist servicemembers in the U.S. military, hosting our monthly service committee, and sponsoring other service projects.

Want to get involved? Read on to learn more. We hope to see you soon!

Chris Stedman
Executive Director
Humanist Haven: A Year of International Service

Are you looking to connect with others, find support, and participate in a community? Do you want a place where you can explore what makes for a meaningful life and how to help others along the way? We encourage you to join us on the second Sunday of each month for Humanist Haven, a nonreligious gathering to celebrate life's joys and reflect on its challenges, hosted in the Clubhouse at The Grove by YHC.

October's speakers will be Conor Robinson and Wendy Webber, who recently undertook a year of international Humanist service with Pathfinders Project--completing ten clean water, education, and human rights projects in seven countries. At October's Humanist Haven, they'll share how volunteering abroad gave them insights and hope for the efforts to build humanist and interfaith communities in the States.

What: "Seeing Home with New Eyes: Lessons from a Year of International Service" with Conor Robinson and Wendy Webber
When: Sunday, October 12, 1 PM (with refreshments to follow)
Where: Clubhouse at The Grove (760 Chapel St., New Haven, CT)
Who: Open to the public!
Interfaith Dialogue & Service Series Starts This Month!

Join Saint Thomas More (the Catholic Center at Yale) and YHC on Thursday, October 16 at 7 PM for a service project and dialogue about our diverse motivations for service and our shared desire to improve the world. This is the first event in a bi-monthly series of service and dialogue events designed to help address hunger in New Haven while giving our communities an opportunity to better understand one another and break down suspicion and stereotypes. While this is a collaboration between Catholics and Humanists/atheists, all students are welcome!

What: "Catholics and Humanists together: A joint service project and dialogue on values"
When: Thursday, October 16 at 7 PM
Where: Saint Thomas More (268 Park St., New Haven, CT)
Who: Undergraduate and graduate students only
First Practical Humanism Discussion This Week!

How does Humanism inform our approach to life? How do nontheists or nonreligious people deal with the difficulties and rewards of everyday life outside of religion? Join us in exploring these questions at the Practical Humanism Discussion Group, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month--beginning this week on October 8--at 7 PM in the Conservatory at The Grove.

Want to help plan events like this discussion group? YHC's committees, made up of community members, help us come up with ideas and plan educational, service, and social events. What do you want out of your Humanist community? We encourage you to participate in our committees and help build the kind of community you want! Committees meet on Wednesday evenings at 6 PM in the Conservatory at The Groveclick here to learn more and get involved.
Atheists in Foxholes: Special Event Before Veterans Day

In recent years, discussions over the place of atheists, agnostics, and nonreligious people in the military have grown--from several attempts to allow for Humanist chaplains in the military, to a recent decision regarding a mandatory "so help me God" Air Force oath, to the Army approving "Humanist" as a religious preference for the first time. On Thursday, November 6--a few days before Veterans Day--join YHC at 7 PM in LC 101 for a discussion with Jason Torpy, President of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, and Jason Heap, the first Humanist Navy chaplain candidate, on the challenges facing atheist and Humanist servicemembers, how these challenges relate to those of other religious minorities in the military such as Sikh Americans, how chaplains of all religious affiliations can work to support Humanists in crisis, and how we can make the military a safer and more welcoming place for people of all faiths--as well as those without faith.

What: "Atheists in Foxholes: Challenges and Changes for Humanists in the U.S. Military" with Jason Torpy and Jason Heap
When: Thursday, November 6, 7 PM
Where: Linsly-Chittenden Hall 101 (63 High St., New Haven, CT)
Who: Open to the public!
Struggling with addiction? Support Group Starts at YHC
Are you struggling with addictive behaviors? We host a weekly SMART Recovery support group meeting every Monday at 6:30 PM in the Conservatory room at The Grove. The goal of SMART, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, is to provide quality therapy and community for individuals struggling with addictive behaviors--and a nontheistic alternative to twelve-step programs, which rely heavily on God and Christian theology. People of all faiths and beliefs are welcome to attend.
Students: Service, Dialogue, Weekly Dinner, Counseling

Join the Yale Atheists, Humanists, and Agnostics this Friday (October 10) from 5:30-7:30 PM for a service project with Hunger Heroes Soup Kitchen at 323 Temple Street (across from TD, in the building with the plastic flamingos). Hunger Heroes serves dinner at the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen's satellite location on Friday and Saturday nights, and is one of New Haven's only weekend evening soup kitchens.

Today (Tuesday, October 7) at 5 PM in LC 317, Yale AHA will cosponsor a discussion with Yale Students for Christ. Additionally, please join Yale AHA every Thursday at 6 PM in Timothy Dwight College for weekly dinner. If you can't make dinner and have something on your mind, you can email us and sign up to meet with Chris for one-on-one counseling.
