A NEW SCHOOL YEAR, A NEW YHC

Last year, while serving as a Humanist chaplain at Harvard, I started working with the Yale Humanist Community. I visited regularly to begin building our organization alongside enthusiastic, dedicated, and visionary Humanist students and community members. Each visit was more inspiring than the last--but it's hard to build community when you don't actually live in the community.

I'm grateful to now live in New Haven, where I've started working full-time with many of you on the project of building community for atheists, agnostics, Humanists, and the nonreligious at Yale and beyond. Thank you for making me feel so welcome already.

We have an exciting fall season planned, with some big announcements still to come. Check out some of our new regular programs and upcoming events below, and email us if you'd like to set up a meeting to discuss our plans and your ideas. We can't do this work without you.

I hope to see you soon!

Executive Director
Humanist Haven: A new gathering in New Haven
First meeting Sunday 9/14 with Dr. Laurie Santos

Are you looking to connect with others, find support, and participate in a community? Do you want a place where you can explore what makes for a meaningful life and how to help others along the way? We encourage you to join us on the second Sunday of each month for Humanist Haven, a nonreligious gathering to celebrate life's joys and reflect on its challenges, hosted in the Clubhouse at The Grove by the Yale Humanist Community. Together we'll reflect, wonder, celebrate, and work to make the world better.

Our first Humanist Haven speaker will be YHC Faculty Adviser Dr. Laurie Santos, associate professor of psychology at Yale University and director of Yale's Comparative Cognition Laboratory. Dr. Santos will talk about what cognitive science research tells us about how to live a happier, more rational life. You'll leave with some practical, empirically-informed tips for how to live better.

What: "How to Live The Good Life: Seven Unexpected Tips from Cognitive Science" with Dr. Laurie Santos
When: Sunday 9/14, 1:00 PM
Where: Clubhouse at The Grove, 760 Chapel St., New Haven, CT

We're also excited to announce that future Humanist Haven speakers include Conor Robinson and Wendy Webber, who just got back from a year of service around the world, in October--and Michael De Dora, President of UN Religious Freedom Committee, in December. Stay tuned for updates!
Students: Weekly Dinner, Counseling, and More

Looking to connect with Humanist students? Join us for the Yale AHA (Atheists, Humanists, and Agnostics) weekly dinner every Thursday at 6 PM in Timothy Dwight College. Come share your story and learn more about what AHA has planned for the year!

Can't make tonight's dinner? Do you have something on your mind and want to talk? You can email us and sign up to meet with Chris for one-on-one counseling, or you can come hang out with Maytal Saltiel (Yale's Assistant University Chaplain for Special Programs) and Chris for a weekly chat at Cross Campus (in front of Bass Library) from 2-3 PM every Tuesday.

Graduate students: Check out our first Young Adult/Professionals/Grad Students meeting on Wednesday, September 17 at 6 PM at The Grove--and, if you're at the Divinity School, come to the Open Party's first lunch meeting on Wednesday, September 10 at 1 PM! Email us for details.
Join a YHC Committee or Discussion Group

How does Humanism inform our approach to life? How do nontheists or nonreligious people deal with the difficulties and rewards of everyday life outside of religion? Join us in exploring these questions at the Practical Humanism Discussion Group, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month (beginning 10/8) at 7 PM in the Conservatory at The Grove.

Want to help build our community? YHC's committees, made up of community members, help us come up with ideas and plan educational, service, and social events. What do you want out of your Humanist community? We encourage you to participate in our committees and help build the kind of community you want! Committees meet on Wednesday evenings at 6 PM in the Conservatory at The Grove (beginning 9/17); click here to learn more and get involved.

From Our Connecticut and Chaplaincy Partners

Our friends in CT and around the U.S. have some very important events and initiatives coming up. Here are a few that we think you should consider:

The largest climate demonstration in history will take place in New York on Sunday, September 21, and Humanist groups from the entire region will be joining together to demonstrate. Click here for more information. On Saturday, September 20, the CT Coalition of Reason is sponsoring a Secular Leadership Summit for any current secular leaders or those interested in being a future secular leader. There will be a workshop in the morning led by Michael Werner, pizza for lunch, and brainstorming and networking in the afternoon. Click here for details. Finally, be sure to check out Applied Sentience, a new platform for the next generation of Humanist thinkers and activists, edited by YHC board member and former Director of Operations Paul Chiariello and featuring student writers like Aaron Gertler.
