Oklahoma Modernism Weekend!

The Oklahoma City Foundation for Architecture joins the Okie Mod Squad in hosting Oklahoma Modernism Weekend May 20-22.

Oklahoma is home to a treasure of mid-century modern architecture that many outside of the region know little about. To heighten awareness of our state's exciting architectural heritage, the Okie Mod Squad and the Oklahoma City Foundation for Architecture will be hosting the Sooner state's first-ever Okie Modernism Weekend on May 20, 21 and 22 in Oklahoma City at one of our most iconic mid-century buildings, the egg-shaped First Christian Church.

This event is FREE!

We still have openings in each class!  Register Today!

1st Grade:
The first grade group will spend the day using their artistic and investigative sides to learn some of the basic concepts of architecture as well as how the various people involved in the architectural process contribute to designing and constructing buildings. They will participate in hands on activities teaching some of these basic concepts early in the day and then move on to a joint venture to design and build an individual model of a building type of their choice to take home.

2nd & 3rd:
The second and third grade children will be taken on a journey in learning the basic concepts, materials, and structures of architecture as the day begins. We will encourage them to exercise their creativity while implementing those set of guidelines in creating their architectural model. Our main goal is to provide them with an overall view on the means and methods that architects and engineers apply as they progress through the design process. We will provide them with guidance and reiterate what learned during and upon completion of their models; followed by their presentation as they tell the story of their journey. Our hopes are the children leave the workshop with a better understanding of the design process and how it shapes the environment that surrounds us.

4th, 5th & 6th Grade:
The 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will participate in an interactive presentation/discussion about the diverse elements and concepts that comprise architecture. This will include information to assist in identifying the basic concepts behind what architecture is, the affects it has on the surrounding environment, and the role an architect plays in developing it. To conclude their experience the students will participate in a case study of the architecture and engineering elements of downtown Oklahoma City. The students will then apply this knowledge along with the skills they have learned throughout the day to making a model of the building of their choice at a set location in downtown Oklahoma City.
