OCFA Quarterly Tour set for November 7! We will tour Historic Union Station and then head to the Skydance Bridge to learn more about bridge vision & design!
Join the Oklahoma City Foundation for Architecture for our 4th Quarter Tour on Saturday, November 7 to learn more about the historic Union Station.
Oklahoma City Union Depot is a building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that served as a "union station" from 1931 until 1967. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It now houses the main office of the Central Oklahoma Transportation & Parking Authority.
This portion of the tour will be lead by: Larry John Hopper, AICP. Larry Hopper is a certified planner and is experienced in economic revitalization, urban planning, transportation planning, and both bus and rail strategies. The Planning Manager for EMBARK Transit in Oklahoma City since 1999, he is now very involved in the MAPS streetcar project and the new bus rapid transit (BRT) planning for the Northwest Corridor. He was the project manager on the 2009 Alternatives Analysis (AA) leading to the 2011 streetcar route decision. Larry also managed the region's 2005 "Fixed Guideway Transit Plan" that recommended commuter rail, streetcar, a downtown transit hub, BRT, and vastly more bus service. The Northwest BRT planning has been accelerated because in late 2014 he got OKC selected by the USDOT as one of one five cities in America to test a new health-in-corridor-planning approach.
Following the tour of Union Station we will walk over to the Skydance Bridge where architects, Hans Butzer, AIA and Ken Fitzsimmons, AIA will talk about the design of the project. Hans Butzer, AIA is an architect, teacher, urban designer, developer, and investor who exercises his passion for crafting buildings and places for people through teaching and practice. Hans is the co-founder of Butzer Architects and Urbanism (BAU), together with his wife Torrey A. Butzer, Assoc. AIA. Collaborating since 1990, the Butzers lead a multi-disciplinary team that explores place-making through award-winning architecture and urban design. Notable collaborations such as the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the Skydance Bridge and the SLIVR exemplify Hans's ambitions for performance-based architecture that is fiscally, environmentally and socially sustainable.
Alongside his practice, Hans is Director of the University of Oklahoma's Division of Architecture (DivA) where he has taught since 1999. He holds the titles of Mabrey Presidential Professor and A. Blaine Imel, Jr. Professor. As Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, his teaching and research focus on sustainability as an extension of ethics, efficiency, community and high design.
Ken Fitzsimmons, AIA graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and worked for various architecture firms in Texas. He returned to his hometown of Oklahoma City in 2006 to be a part of the exciting ongoing urban revitalization. He is a licensed Architect and Interior Designer in Texas and Oklahoma.
