ECAS President Announces New Leadership Team

For the past 30 years ECAS has been under the leadership of the SCA president and office staff. With the appointment of  Mark Cooper as the new SCA President in April, the SCA Board of Directors decided it was necessary for Mark to focus all his energies on the work of SCA. SCA board chair Sam Shaw met with ECAS board Chair Joe Mignon to review the decision and decide on next steps for ECAS. Doug Folk and Howard Jesse both currently consultants with SCA provided a review of the relationship and outlined the current status of ECAS. Subsequent to this meeting they met with Joe and offered a work plan and short term contractual arrangement to provide their services to ECAS in the interim (until the 2014 AGM). The ECAS board was convened on May 1, 2013 and ratified the work plan and contract. Doug is currently serving as the Executive Director of ECAS and Howard is fulfilling the role of Operations Manager. The SCA accounting clerk is still under contract with ECAS to provide all financial services.

For the past 5 months the team has focused on:

  • getting all ECAS paper and electronic files and directories sorted and secured
  •  reviewing and updating the membership list
  • arranging and managing the various committee meeting agendas and minutes
  • establishing protocols for ECAS members to access CECA publications and documents
  • reviewing and preparing By-Laws and Objectives for presentation and discussion at the AGM
  • providing ongoing member services
  • develop and administer a member wide survey to determine the needs, interests and future direction for ECAS
  • create an ongoing communication strategy to keep the members informed and to build the membership
  • investigate and offer educational opportunities for the membership to support ongoing in-service and education in areas relevant to contractors and the industry

The board will review the work of the current team during regular board meetings and a long term staffing/leadership strategy will be presented and determined at the AGM in February 2014. Please watch for the upcoming electronic member survey - take the time to offer your ideas and insights. The results will be used to formulate our strategic plan for the next 2-3 years.

Please contact either Doug or Howard if you have ideas to help us make ECAS a stronger voice for the industry or if you need their support to improve your business.

ECAS President

SaskTel Fibre Optics Cabling Workshop

We are pleased to partner with SaskTel to offer this workshop to ECAS members.  They have room for 50-60 at this session.  Pending the response from our members,  we will offer the session to non-members as well, room permitting, and will also use the opportunity to promote the value of an ECAS membership to those who attend.  We will collect and distribute information provided and forward it to our members who cannot attend.
Liaison Committee Report
One of the most important committees of ECAS is the Liaison Committee who have met quarterly with the Inspections Branch of SaskPower for the past number of years.  ECAS members (2 south and 2 north) are chosen at the AGM to meet with the Inspectors to discuss any issues, concerns, changes or interpretations that affect contractors.  We have recently invited and welcomed Apprenticeship and the Licensing division to this committee. In addition we will be consulting with the Board to consider extending an invitation to suppliers and engineers to join the committee.  Recent meetings have focused on a variety of issues and concerns that affect our industry.  Meeting minutes will be published on our new website.
See new website launch information below.  We will be seeking your input: prior to the meetings members will be encouraged to provide input/questions for discussion.
Meetings With Local Associations
Discussions and arrangements are underway with the local Electrical Contractors Associations in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert to meet and discuss issues and opportunities that are common to all organizations. ECAS would like to be more responsive to the local associations by offering better communication, leadership and support to create a stronger provincial voice for our industry.
Canadian Electrical Contractors Association  (CECA )

Membership Drive

ECAS 2014 membership renewal notices will be sent out in late November. Your membership is the lifeline of our organization, we encourage you to renew and be a part of the new ECAS team. With the ever changing needs of our industry and the unprecedented economic activity in the province, as the largest trade employer in the province we need our voice to be strong and to represent our industry at all levels of government and with the various regulatory and related industry organizations that need to hear our ideas and opinions. Please also encourage other businesses, suppliers and associates in the industry to become members and get involved. We have been told in the past that we are not representative of the industry due to our membership size - let's change this so we can truly become

"The Voice of The Electrical Industry in Saskatchewan"
