The State of Wisconsin recommends that municipalities do a full revaluation every 10 years to help ensure accurate property assessments. A full revaluation involves the village assessor doing both exterior and interior inspections of all properties in the Village to establish new assessment values.

The last time a full revaluation was done in Wind Point was 1981. The Village has had periodic exterior-only revaluations, which saved on inspection costs and avoided inconvenient inspections. However, changes in the housing market and in the Village's housing stock over the years has caused our assessment data to become outdated. The village assessor recommends completing a revaluation in the near future.

The Village Board has discussed this topic in length at meetings on June 2 and June 11. The Board will discuss it again at the meeting on July 9 and will consider whether to have a revaluation done in 2016.

Lake Meadow Dr. and Applewood Ct. are scheduled to be slag sealed under a contract with Fahrner Asphalt Sealers. Initial crack-filling and patching work was completed on June 29. Slag sealing is expected to take place the week of July 6, but the exact date will depend on weather. Fahrner will set out "No Parking" signs with a date range written on the signs indicating the expected days of slag sealing.

There may be minor traffic delays while work is in progress. Slag is temporarily stored at the Wind Point School parking lot. Driveways and side streets will be accessible during the project, except for short periods when equipment is blocking access. Please join us on the July 5 climb to the top of the Wind Point Lighthouse and visit the Fog Horn Building Museum, the Gift Shop and the Memorial Garden on the shore of Lake Michigan.  It's a wonderful experience for you, your family and friends.  The 144 steps in the spiral staircase to the top require sturdy shoes (no flip-flops or high heels) and a certain level of fitness.  Due to safety and liability concerns, children under six are not allowed to climb.  Go to the lighthouse web site to sign up for the climbs on the hour; on the half-hour, you can register on-site.  However, you may have to wait depending on the number of climbers ahead of you.  Cost is $5 for those 6 - 12 and $10 for ages 13 and older. 

We have new items in the Gift Shop (embroidered fleeces, t-shirts, caps, mugs and Jim Charnon's Collection of photos, cards and puzzles plus books and other souvenirs of your visit).  We also have a new exhibit of the anchor from the Alice and a new diorama of the Wind Point Lighthouse around 1910 developed by Jim Charnon and Jim Erven, members of Friends. We hope to see you on the 5th.

• Wear reflective and bright colored clothing so that motorists are able to see you.

• Bicyclists must adhere to the same traffic rules and regulations as a motor vehicle. That means stopping at stop signs and yielding at yield signs just as if you were driving a car.

• Bicyclists should maintain a safe speed and remain in control at all times. Keep both hands ready to brake. If you are passing another bicyclist or pedestrian, maintain a safe distance if possible and announce "passing on left" when passing someone in front of you.

• Riding in packs crowds streets and creates a safety hazard for both bicyclists and motorists.

• Wear a helmet while biking and never ride with headphones.
   
• Watch children carefully.

• Make eye contact with drivers - Assume that other drivers don't see you until you are sure that they do. Eye contact is important with any driver which might pose a threat to your safety.

Motorists Safety Reminders

• Keep your eyes open for pedestrians walking on Village streets.

• Yield to bicyclists as you would to any other vehicle as they must also adhere to the same traffic laws as you do.

• Be aware that the speed limit within the Village is 25 mph unless posted differently.
