Village Board Highlights
September 12, 2013

The Board approved a request from the Friends of the Wind Point Lighthouse's to expand the brick garden into the grassy south of the current garden. The Board agreed to try to reduce the cost of police service charges to the Friends by temporarily scheduling a single officer in October and June and then re-evaluating the policy.   The Friends reported on work that they did on the northeast storage shed.

The Board revised committee assignments as follows:

Plan Commission/Architectural Review: Susan Sanabria.

Sustainability: David Heller, chair. Public Works: Susan Sanabria, member.

The Board approved paying the Fahrner invoice adjusted to cover the cost of handling slag placed and held in the DPW yard.

Administrator Barbara Grant presented a draft multi-year lighthouse maintenance plan and asked the Board whether to plan to use staff or volunteers for paint jobs or to use contractors. The Board directed Grant to begin by planning on using the keepers, staff, and volunteers to paint interior and lower stories of exterior walls where possible and to include funding for contractors for more difficult painting.

After meeting in closed session to deliberate on a contract for village administrator, the Board agreed to meet in special session on September 16.

Our Dirty Stormwater Hurts Lake Michigan

Rain is great for our lawns and gardens but can cause problems for Lake Michigan.   Rain that runs off streets, driveways and parking lots becomes contaminated by our lawn and auto chemicals.  This flow of polluted water goes over ground and thru underground pipes without being treated.  It goes directly into our Wind Point ponds, streams, and Lake Michigan right along with the dog poop, lawn fertilizer, car oil, and anything else picked up along the way.

Keep our waters clean by minimizing the use of lawn chemicals, picking up after your dog, and keeping your car in good repair.  Other ways to help?
