From the Desk of the President:

As we get 2016 started at the San Diego County Floor Covering Association, I would like to thank the 2015 Board and our retail members, for having the confidence to elect me the new Board President for 2016.

Without the leadership from our immediate past President, Ken McKillip; and everything that I've learned the past two years from outgoing board member and past President, Don Melucci; I don't think I would've excepted this challenge.

We've all been busy contacting existing Association members for renewal and soliciting new membership for the upcoming year. We're also recruiting and renewing our corporate sponsors as well. Please contact Ken McKillip for any questions regarding membership or sponsorship opportunities.

Our commitment to the community regarding education and philanthropy will continue to be our focus in 2016.

Annual golf tournament at Riverwalk Golf Club is set for Thursday June 2nd, benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. It's not too early to register your foursome for this event!

The Sid Ruben golf championship is set for Thursday October 6th. All proceeds benefit our scholarship fund. In 2015, we awarded eight $1000 scholarships. This year's chair for the scholarship committee is Brandy Papas. Please contact Brandy for any questions or applications for the scholarship awards this year.

Some events to look forward to this year: our annual Day at the Races at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club; an educational dinner seminar; as well as a new event, Day at the Ballpark at Petco Park. More info on these events listed below.

In closing, I would like to sincerely give thanks all of our San Diego CountyFloor Covering Association members and our vendor sponsors. We are looking forward to a fantastic year!

Dave McCowan
2016 SDCFCA President

History of our Members:
Village Carpets Flooring America

The history of Village Carpets-Flooring America started over 25 years ago; in the far eastern region of San Diego County-in the small mountain community of Alpine. George Wood and his wife Pat originally purchased the business in 1990 which has been family owned and operated, and still is today.

One year after George and Pat Wood bought Village Carpets; their son, Randy became a partner-and an owner of the business over time. Village Carpets' commitment to customer service and family values attracted George and Pats daughter, Jolene and their son-in-law, Tom Julian. Jolene handled the bookkeeping; and her husband Tom worked in sales-also would be an owner of the business down the line.

Eventually the Woods' grandson; Sean Julian, joined the family business; running the warehouse and handling installations. In 2004, the Woods' granddaughter Kim Julian, graduated college and joined the family business. Kim started out answering phones and became the store manager of the Alpine store shortly thereafter, and continues to manage the business today.

The Village Carpets Flooring America Team

George Wood decided to join Flooring America, a nationwide buying cooperative of over 500 stores, which gives Village Carpets the buying power of 3,000 stores combined. Since becoming involved with Flooring America, Village Carpets has been able to offer customers with the best of flooring products at the lowest prices. Every Flooring America cooperative is family-owned and operated which was a good fit for the business and wise business decision by George Wood.

Village Carpets has operated out of several different locations spanning across the East County region of San Diego over the past 25 plus years--from Alpine, Lakeside and El Cajon. Today, Village Carpets is expanded into one 4,000 sq. ft. showroom in El Cajon; located at 1309 N. Magnolia.

In 2013, George Wood passed away; and in 2015, Tom Julian and Sean Julian purchased the family business from Randy. Village Carpets has and always will pride themselves on providing great customer service and a great floor covering experience for every customer. What makes Village Carpets set apart from other retailers; is their lifetime installation guarantee--because of the expertise of licensed installers that take great pride in their workmanship. They offer a full line of flooring ranging from carpet, hardwood, laminates, and window coverings.

Village Carpets family has always been committed to serving the community. George and Pat Wood were highly involved with the Kiwanis and Soroptimist Clubs of Alpine for many years, giving back through community service events in the small town were Village Carpets' first location was started. Today, Village Carpets' Flooring America are members of the San Diego Floor Covering Association, and noted that their favorite SDCFCA event is the yearly Day at the Races. They are also members of the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. Village Carpets' Flooring America takes great honor in sponsoring local schools, teams, and children whenever possible.

Note from the Past President:

On behalf of the SDCFCA Board of Directors, I wanted to thank all the Members and Sponsors for your support in 2015. As outgoing President, I again would like to thank the Board of Directors and current Members for the help and participation in our Association. As Immediate Past President, I am taking over the position of Membership Chairperson. I encourage all current Members to renew their membership and would ask that non-members consider joining our Association (www.sdcfca.com). The annual dues are $295.00 which includes Membership in the World Floor Covering Association (www.wfca.org). Please take a moment to go to these websites. I think you will find that the benefits outweigh the membership cost.

To our loyal corporate sponsors, my thanks and appreciation for your continued support. I wish all a successful 2016 and hope that you will continue sponsoring our association. Our Scholarship Program has given out $18,000.00 in the last 5 years. We established a Hardship Fund offering $500.00 to help offset expenses. These programs are available to current members and their employee's families.

Our continuing support of the Ronald McDonald House and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K has been a very rewarding experience for our Association. We will complete the carpet installations at Ronald McDonald House this year. Thanks to our members who have donated labor and to Mohawk for their support with special pricing on the carpet.

It is my goal to increase our membership and make SDCFCA the best Affiliate Association of the WFCA.
