Record-setting Year for Sea Turtle Nests on Kiawah Island
The Southeastern United States is a popular nesting location for sea turtles. Kiawah's nesting season typically starts the second week of May and ends mid-August, and its hatching season usually runs mid-July through October.
Kiawah's Turtle Patrol is one of the largest volunteer programs of its kind in the United States. These volunteers record data about the nests and hatchings and help protect the nests from predators. Volunteers have protected Kiawah's nests since 1972, increasing the hatching rate from around 3% to almost 70%.
This is a record-setting year for Kiawah with over 350 sea turtle nests! Summer is the perfect time to be on Kiawah and experience this remarkable event. |
