Year of Song
| |
From CDSS Executive Director Rima Dael
Following up on a year of celebrating our Centennial, we are designating 2016 as our YEAR OF SONG. What is that? Well, we are taking a whole year to answer the question, "What does song mean to CDSS?" I chose 2016 for two reasons: to honor the start of Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles' prolific folk song collecting in southern Appalachia (1916-1918), and to look at how song serves our mission. This examination also will begin a cycle at CDSS of focusing on one or two genres at a time, as we identify community needs and allow for better use of our resources.
Read more about the Year of Song and January's selection "May It Fill Your Soul," a new composition from singer and instrumentalist Brendan Taaffe of Vermont here.

Be in the Directory
| | One of the last of our Centennial projects is a print edition of the CDSS Member Directory. The deadline for inclusion is this Sunday, January 31; you can join here. If you think you're a member and want to check your info, go here. Your membership ensures that CDSS can continue to support, advocate, educate, connect and sustain the dance and music traditions that we cherish for ourselves and for our families for the next hundred years.

Thank You
| | The CDSS staff thanks you for your kind notes and messages since the death of our coworker Jeff Martell on January 8. His family's service for him last week was packed with friends, stories, songs, many tears, and a lot of laughter.
