Friends of Northborough Seniors Announcement - May 2014

Monday, May 19
1:30 at the Senior Center

A special folk-music program will follow the annual meeting of the Friends of the Northborough Senior Center on Monday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m. in the Center at 119 Bearfoot Road. All are welcome and invited to attend the meeting and performance featuring musician Aubrey Atwater.

Admission is free.

Every week, there are hundreds of program participants, volunteers, and other visitors coming to the Senior Center, notes Muriel Swenor, president of the Friends, whose mission is to support the Senior Center through fundraising activities. "For those who may ask what the Friends do, our annual meeting's review of the year's activities will be informative," she adds. "Our membership is growing, including non-residents of Northborough, and we welcome new members - you don't have to be a 'senior' to join the Friends!"

The Friends look forward to welcoming Aubrey Atwater of Warren, Rhode Island, to our town's beautiful Senior Center. An award-winning musician, vocalist, writer, and dancer, she presents captivating programs of folk music, dance, and spoken word.

She has performed and taught classes throughout the United States as well as England, Ireland, and Canada.  She sings and plays the mountain dulcimer, old-time banjo, guitar, mandolin, and Irish tin whistle, and thrills audiences with her highly percussive clogging. In a scholarly, yet humorous way, Ms. Atwater conveys the heritage behind traditional folk music and dance, showing a deep passion and understanding of folk history and its key players. She is also known as part of the acclaimed duo Atwater-Donnelly, wherein she and her husband Elwood Donnelly perform with up to eight other band members and have twelve recordings and six books to their credit.

There will be refreshments after the meeting and an opportunity to purchase Atwater-Donnelly CDs.
