Student Spotlight

I was drawn to Davis by the people it had,
And after surviving my first year, I joined the Usrey lab.
The decision was tough with too many cool things to do,
But man, does that Marty Usrey know how to woo.
I now practice ephys all through the night,
Searching for geniculate cells with fluctuating levels of delight.
I study the development of correlated firing
For I am interested in the cortex's orientation wiring.
Does correlated firing in the developing LGN
Affect simple cells' preference for orientation?
Learning the answer will determine my fate
Of when I am able to graduate.
Along with development of orientation selectivity,
I have studied adult geniculate plasticity.
We recently published a paper on this theme.
You can read it in Neuron-the study proved interesting.
I've presented at eight scientific meetings, booyakasha!
I recommend the UC Davis IMGC because they hand out moolah.
Also, the Davis GSA gives travel awards,
I'm glad that with those, I've finally gotten on board.
In addition to meetings, I traveled to Santa Fe
To learn about how scientific writers play.
I also went to the Harbor of Cold Spring
To spend two weeks learning about vision things.
I find balance in yoga, running long distance,
And playing tennis, although in besting HJ, I find resistance.
I dabble in music, am trained on the keys,
But presently enjoy sleeping more than any of these.
In the years to come, I have a few goals:
Running strongly in June's Dipsea and fulfilling my graduate student role.
I hope more publications and money are on the way
And a good job at the end that I'll enjoy every day.
That about wraps up this slant rhyming letter
I hope now y'all know me a bit better.
