Wood poles
good as steel
in wildfires

When it comes to performance in wildfires, steel poles offer few advantages over wood poles and in some cases may perform worse, according to a new NAWPC Technical Bulletin.

The bulletin Performance of Distribution Utility Poles in Wildland Fire Areas details what happens to wood and steel utility poles in wildfire conditions. It notes while wood burns, it chars and that offers some insulation against the effects of fire on structural strength. While steel doesn't burn, it may lose strength more quickly than wood as it softens at temperatures typically seen in wildfires.

The technical bulletin reveals current research on wood and steel performance in fire and offers recommendations for protecting utility poles from wildfires.

Free seminar offers in-depth look
at designing wood pole structures

Get schooled on wood poles in a special Wood Pole Structure Design seminar available at no charge to utility and coop personnel.

The 2-1/2 day seminar, set for Sept. 23-25 in Charlotte, NC, offers in-depth instruction on how to design wood electrical distribution structures.

Students will learn how to calculate strength and maximum allowable spans for wind and ice loading, guy loading due to tension and wind, and non-design aspects of wood pole structures. Students completing the seminar, sponsored by NAWPC and HiLine Engineering, will earn18 Professional Development hours.

The free session will be beneficial to utility personnel from design engineers, system executives and purchasing managers to foremen, staking technicians and linemen. Non-utility and non-coop participants may attend for a fee of $795 per person.

Advanced registration is required and the seminar is limited to the first 40 people to register. To sign up, download the registration form from the NAWPC website at www.woodpoles.org.

Get smart on Wood Poles

Put a full library of wood pole information at your fingertips with the NAWPC Wood Pole Guide smartphone app.

The free app has been a popular download among utilities since it was released this spring. It remains the only wood pole resource available for smartphones and tablets.

The app is available for download at online stores for iPhones, Android and Windows smartphones as well as iPads and Android tablets.

One utility was so impressed with the app that it is providing copies to its engineering, purchasing and maintenance personnel.
