Whole Planet, Full Plate

Fuller Symposium

By the year 2050, our planet will be home to another two billion people. How and where we will feed everyone, while not overwhelming our planet, has become one of the most pressing conservation issues of the 21st century.

The  2014 Fuller Symposium, Whole Planet, Full Plate: Finding ways to feed the world sustainably, will discuss how we can freeze the footprint of food while still nourishing billions.

This one-day event will take place on November 12, 2014 at the National Geographic Society's headquarters in Washington, D.C. It is free and open to the public.

Cannot attend in person? Join us online. The entire symposium will be live streamed on WWF's website.

Free Online Course Opens Today!

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE NATURAL CAPITAL PROJECT APPROACH

NCP101
Welcome page for NCP101

We are proud to announce the launch of our first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), NCP-101: An Introduction to the Natural Capital Project Approach.

NCP101 is now open for enrollment, and the course materials go live today. This course introduces the approach we have developed-and honed in our engagements around the world-to bring information about nature's values into decisions. It uses specific examples to illustrate how the approach has worked in Belize and Colombia and highlights key methods and tools used in implementation.

The self-guided course introduces the concepts of natural capital and ecosystem services, introduces a selection of ecosystem service models, and includes recommendations for how to effectively summarize and communicate model outputs to stakeholders and other decision-makers. The course is designed to take up to four hours to complete.

With this course, we aim to build capacity in the practitioner community and to more efficiently meet demand for learning about our approach and tools. We launched a pilot version before our Annual Meeting and Training at Stanford this past March, and have incorporated some great feedback from the 200 participants in the course since then. We now ask participants in our in-person trainings to take the course before a training, allowing us to make better use of our time together.

Natural Capital Symposium - March 23-25

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Stanford University
The Natural Capital Symposium will take place at Stanford March 23-25. Image: Luis Jou García, Flikr (cc).

We have just opened registration for the Natural Capital Symposium, which will take place March 23-25, 2015 on Stanford's campus. Our intention is to continue fostering and supporting the community of practice using natural capital understanding to inform decisions. There will be multiple tracks during our three-day event, focusing on our approach, our science and tools, and the challenges ecosystem services practitioners face in engaging with decision-makers, stakeholders, and the public at large.

The science and tools portion of The Natural Capital Symposium will be a 3-day course in NatCap's approach and our primary software tool, InVEST, for those who have limited or no prior experience with our approach and tools. There will also be more advanced technical training sessions offered each day for experienced users, focusing on hands-on work with specific models, the latest updates and advancements with the software, and other topics.

In our sessions on Pathways to Impact, experts from around the world will share experiences in using InVEST and related tools and approaches to drive change in policy and practice.  We will compare theories of change with actual experience of change in contrasting sites, sectors and decision contexts.  In sessions on Integrating Natural Capital and Resilience, we will discuss recent advances, emerging trends, and key challenges. NatCap strives to advance the science behind ecosystem services, and to apply new ways to bring our approach to governments, corporations, and other organizations across the globe. Sharing lessons and opportunities among members of the broader practitioner community is a great way to do that.

We will also be running a "learning exchange" throughout the Symposium. We know that we have a lot to learn from others working in this space, and we hope to foster a lively exchange of knowledge, information, and understanding.  The NatCap Learning Exchange will offer a variety of opportunities to work in small focus groups with NatCappers as well as practitioners from other organizations, including model-specific small-group workshops, poster sessions, focused discussion groups, panel discussions, and more. This will be a great opportunity to seek out new collaborations with NatCap and many other organizations and individuals who will also be in attendance.

A draft agenda, logistical information, and our refund policy can be found on our
websiteBasic registration, which includes three days of attendance, coffee/refreshments, and lunch each day, costs $550 ($400 if you register before January 15th). There are several opportunities for attending on a discounted rate, please see the registration page for details.

We're excited to be developing an event that our community will be excited to return to year after year. We'll have more details about how you and your organization can get involved, as well as a full agenda rolling out in the coming months. We look forward to seeing you at Stanford in March!
