NEWS FROM THE TRAIL
AN UPDATE FROM THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TRAIL ASSOCIATION

A Great Start for PNT Advocacy

Hike the Hill has kicked off!  A weeklong event where the PNTA and other trail organizations meet with agency partners, congressmen and leaders, to discuss the future of trails and recreation and to take a group hike across the National Mall.

A big part of the PNTA is the behind the scenes work of trail advocacy. Each year a staff representative from the PNTA visits men and women of congress and agency officials to build lasting relationships and request funding for the Pacific Northwest Trail. It is that time of the year again where the PNTA will head to Washington along with the Partnership the National Trail System to spearhead the advocacy work for national scenic trails this year. This annual meeting of the trails ends in an event called Hike the Hill! We encourage all those avid hikers interested in advocacy to get involved with the Partnership and Hike the Hill.

To keep our members and readers informed, we have added a sidebar on our advocacy page where you can view planning documents, reports, and visionary plans regarding the PNT. One of these documents is the financial request we are bringing to congress for the 2015 year.

Another exciting addition to the reports page comes from our partners at the Forest Service with a report this past month on the benefits of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail to the nation and the local communities it connects with. The report shows how through partnership, the PNTA and the Forest Service have put up some great numbers on the ground to help engage youth and communities and build and maintain trail.  Take a look here, and on our website on the Advocacy page listed under reports.

The PNTA is hosting  a Spaghetti dinner to support the Experience the Wild Day Camp. Last year over 60 youth  ages 8-12 took  part of the camp, exploring local sites, hiking sections of the PNT, and having fun in the outdoors. This coming year we hope to extend the camp to 4 week long camps for local youth.

Check out our page to learn more and buy tickets to the event which takes place on March 7th at the Sedro-Woolley Community Center.
