Quality at Dynon

As President at Dynon, quality is high on my priority list. The article below announces a Service Bulletin for the SkyView display, to cover a quality defect that we found in some shipped units.

There is a bit of a detective story in how we found the source of field failures for products that worked perfectly at the time of shipment, but started failing randomly in the field. With a thorough internal investigation along with good cooperation from our circuit board vendor, we traced a circuit board defect caused by a wash process not being done correctly. In short, "dirty water" had been used to cleanse the circuit board during manufacturing. Over time, along with temperature changes, and vibration small contaminants can damage the circuit traces between the board layers. Our circuit board vendor is a top-notch vendor known for quality, and this experience taught us that we need to watch for defects no matter where a part comes from.

Our expectation is 100% perfect products out the door and extreme reliability in use during the life of an aircraft. Our products should have quality and reliability as high as, or better than, certified products.  We ship the majority of glass panels in this market, and we are very open in our communication with customers, so any warts at all get reported.  All the more reason to have zero warts.

So what did we do about it?

Over the past year we assigned two people to focus full-time on quality; re-assigning one of our existing engineers and we also hired a second quality expert.  Their job has been to perform a deep dive into reported faults to determine root causes, and also to make process improvements to our supply chain and production to better measure and improve quality.  One result is that we better understand that design and production quality is not enough; we also have to have better control over raw components. Another result is that we have fixed known causes and measurably improved quality. A side benefit is that we are moving even more of the manufacturing process, and jobs, in house, where we can monitor quality at every step.

It is hard to measure quality compared against other avionics manufacturers. But we can measure our own quality and commit to meeting the very high expectations of our customers and ourselves.

SkyView Technical Service Bulletin
SkyView Display Circuit Board Replacement Service Bulletin 021113

An investigation revealed a manufacturing process deviation at a subcontractor which can cause a weakness in a printed circuit board that fulfills a critical role in a SkyView Display. Over time, this weakness can turn into a defect and manifest itself in behavior including: a display that does not power on, a display that powers on, but does not fully boot, or one that freezes during operation. Affected displays should be returned for repair.

To address this issue, Dynon Avionics has released a Technical Service Bulletin that instructs customers to determine if their equipment is affected. Returned displays will have the affected circuit board replaced. All other hardware will be updated as necessary and the display will be tested to ensure factory-new functionality.

SkyView Hands-On Training - More Classes and Locations!

We at Dynon recognize that transition training is important before piloting a new airplane, or airplane type. Whether in the clouds or in clear skies, flying a new plane is not the right time to be learning how to operate aircraft avionics. Our SkyView training classes are an ongoing series of hands-on three-hour courses, instructed by Kirk Kleinholz, CFII and Sales Manager for Dynon Avionics.  Participants sit in front of live SkyView equipment and learn in-depth how to operate SkyView.  For more information about classes see the Transition Training page on our website.

Factory Transition Training Classes

The next classes are being held at our factory near Seattle, Washington.  The classes are free, but please do sign up so we know you are coming. If you are from out of town and want to make a weekend of it, nearby are some incredible aviation sites. The Seattle Museum of Flight, Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection (perfectly restored, flight worthy WWII aircraft), and the Boeing Factory Tour (747s, 777s, and 787s) are must sees.

If you are interested in seeing Seattle while you are here check out these aviation attractions:
