Good Things Happen Every Day
at The Silver Academy
|
The week before Passover was exciting here at The Silver Academy as we prepared to celebrate the holiday. On Tuesday, we held three different model seders for students and the community.
Our youngest students in Ganienu and Kindergarten came together for their model seder under the direction of Tammy Reid and Sally Jo Bronner. This model seder was especially unique because the students used Haggadahs that they created themselves! Over the course of the last few months, students designed each page while learning about the rituals and the story. After the model seder, students took their Haggadahs home, and many used them as part of the seder with their own family.
Students in first through fourth grades joined together for their model seder under the direction of Aviva Woodland and Ellis Rosenberg. Not only did the students and teachers complete an entire model seder, they also performed songs and plays about Passover.
Finally, the students in fifth through eighth grades held their model seder in conjunction with the JCC's Senior Adult Club. The Silver Academy students were seated with the adults, including some pairs of grandparents and grandchildren! Rabbi Gewirtz, along with the students, led the model seder.
The Silver Academy thanks all who helped to make these very meaningful programs happen. We wish to especially thank the kindergarten class who not only grated fresh horseradish, but also made delicious charoset for everyone.

6th Grade Language Arts
Mrs. Jessica Wenzelberger
The 6th grade class has been working on poetry this week. If you were in attendance at the Celebration of Learning in April, you heard their original class ballad; however, this week we are blending poetry and social studies together as we take a trip around the globe. Our main focus this week will be studying and writing original Haikus from Japan and Limericks from Ireland. We are also learning about Japan in social studies. Stop by our room to hear us recite these poems on Friday!
Math 24 Club
Mrs. Mindy Lock
If you come to school at 7:30 on a Tuesday morning, you may be surprised to find 4th and 5th grade students having fun playing a math game! The Math 24 club practiced all year in preparation for the regional Math 24 competition which was held Monday, May 2nd, at the Capital Area IU. Two hundred students from three counties sent their best 4th and 5th grade math students to compete. Congratulations to the Silver Academy team members: Elez Bell, Sarah Merwin, Moshe Schertz, and Omer Levy. Also, mazel tov to Elez Bell, for being recognized as one of the top 40 participants. Many thanks to our student coach, Erin Brodsky for outstanding support of the team!
