Passover Message

The holiday of Passover overflows with beautiful traditions especially for the family and the home. It is the Festival that commemorates the physical and spiritual redemption of the Jewish People. Yearly we relive this great event at the Seder and through the many Mitzvot connected with it.

The students at The Silver Academy are being prepared to help conduct a Seder and share their insights on the Passover Haggadah. Various types of Model Sederim will take place at school on Tuesday, April 19th. Please remember that these experiences are only "Models" and each child should have the opportunity to participate at a real Seder.

The Traditional Seder involves the entire family, but the most central participant of the Seder is the child. He/she asks "Why is this night different than all other nights?" and he/she awaits your answer. If we at The Silver Academy can be of further assistance to you in preparation of the oncoming Pesach holiday, please feel free to contact me or your child's teacher. In addition, Friday at noon, (Tomorrow!) I will be leading a Lunch and Learn for parents in the Wolfson Auditorium. The topic of this session will be MAKING YOUR SEDER COME TO LIFE! You are all welcome to attend.

On behalf of The Silver Academy faculty, best wishes for a happy and healthy Passover. CHAG KOSHER V'SAME'ACH!

Inside the Classroom

Kindergarten Judaics
Morah Sarah (Mrs. Sally Jo Bronner)

Kindergarten has been busy learning about Passover, the glorious spring holiday. While learning the story of Moshe leading the Jews out of slavery in Egypt, students discovered why we make matzoh in under 18 minutes.  After we read a book about a matzoh man who ran all over town, students had fun making their own delicious matzoh people, and were challenged to make them within the required amount of time. Kindergarten also enjoyed another Passover project that utilized a different type of dough..they fashioned shank bones from playdoh. These shank bones will be used in all of our school's model Seders. We will also be making homemade horseradish and charoset for the model Seders, with the help of Marcy Flicker.

We learned about the scary plagues through a variety of activities. Students played with toy locusts, wild animals, and frogs; used a set of pillow plagues (donated by Varda Gewirtz) to guide our learning and discussions; made an art project of plagues for our bulletin board; and even completed a plague project in computer class!  But the most exciting aspect of learning about Passover was creating our interactive Haggadah designed by Morah Tamara.  We talked about the importance of each step in the Seder as we created pages to guide us through the service. Finally, we are so excited about our model Seder with Ganeinu!  As a special treat, we will be singing the Ma Nishtana at our Seders, which we performed on stage for our friends and family at the Celebration of Learning last week.

2nd Grade General Studies
Mrs. Brandy Hurley

Second grade recently took an amazing journey to the Amazon rain forest. They explored each layer and discovered hundreds of species of plants and animals. Students were amazed to learn that there is a giant flower that smells like rotten meat! Using their new knowledge, students brought the tropical rain forest to life in the classroom. They worked hard to create a model of the four layers of the rain forest and several of the plants and animals that live in each layer. To really make them feel like they were 'living' in the rain forest, a giant 10-foot kapok tree was built in their classroom! Throughout our study of the tropical rain forest, students learned about some of the threats to this spectacular habitat and became very passionate about helping to save it. These young environmentalists decided to spread awareness, so together they created this acrostic poem.
