Good Things Happen Every Day
at The Silver Academy

It's easy to forget the big picture when you look at details all day long.  When I reflect on how far each and every student has come along this year, it is really remarkable.  Our younger students have learned to read and write in Hebrew and English.  Our older classes are writing and performing original songs.  Our middle school students are knee-deep in Algebra!  I am proud of the hard work that our students put in each and every day.

Because of a late Pesach this year, we moved our Celebration of Learning to an earlier date. The program will begin promptly at 6:45 PM tonight in the Mary Sachs Auditorium.  If you want to catch a glimpse of what our school is all about, clear your schedule and come enjoy this evening's Celebration. I look forward to seeing you at this special event!

סיכום - Summary
  • In this Torah portion we see that the priest functions not only in his religious role but also as a kind or diagnostician.
  • The priests were called upon to diagnose the various skin diseases and offer treatment.
  • In ancient times, a dreaded and well-known disease was called leprosy. The Torah describes the manner in which this disease could be detected and how it was to be treated.
  • The Shabbat before the beginning of the Hebrew month of Nisan is called Shabbat Hachodesh.
  • The additional Maftir reading chosen for this occasion describes the paschal sacrifice of the first Passover in Egypt, as well as the rules and preparation of the celebration of the festival.

Morah Aviva (Mrs. Aviva Woodland)

Last Monday evening on March 28th, Kitah Bet reached an important milestone at their Chumash Celebration. Parents, Grandparents, siblings and friends enjoyed their songs and performance in Hebrew, "L'an Halchu b'Lech L'cha?" (Where did they go in Lech L'cha?") The play is based on a midrash of Avraham as a young boy. Avraham recognizes the one true G-d and realizes that the idols his father Terach made are not G-d. Avraham shows his great trust in G-d in order to leave his place of his birth and go to the place that G-d will show him (Land of Israel). The students enjoyed playing the roles of Avram, Sarai, Terach, People of Or Kasdim, the Melech of Or Kasdim, several narrators and the voice of Hashem. The evening culminated as the students opened up their new chumashim for the first time and learned Chumash with their parents.

Back in the classroom, students are excited to learn Chumash using their new chumashim. Students are paired together with a "Chavruta" (a learning partner), listen to each other read and discuss the verses. Having completed our study about Purim, we now have turned our attention to learning about Pesach.

Kitah Bet and Morah Aviva wish you a warm Chag Pesach Kasher v'Samayach :-)

Technion Challenge Club
Sarah Merwin, Club Member

The Technion Challenge Club was an amazing experience. The challenge for our club members was to design a machine with very complicated steps just to do a simple task, which you may know as a 'Rube Goldberg machine'. The last step of our machine was to reveal a Seder plate. We decided to use the order of the Seder as our overall theme for the machine, so each step was designed to show an element from Passover. The machine was built using lots of different items like, dominoes, legos, marbles, trio blocks, and brushbots (heads of toothbrushes with motors and batteries). We started our club late in the year and had very little time to build the machine before the contest deadline. Although our machine did not work in the end, we learned a lot about building a Rube Goldberg machine and had fun working on it.  I look forward to improving our machine next year and achieving our goal of making it work.

You can purchase gift cards from Susan Leviton, or from the school office staff. Susan's phone number is 608-0190, in case you want to 'call in an order.'
