סיכום - Summary

  • This week's Torah portion begins the third of the Five Books of Moses.
  • It contains the description of five kinds of sacrifices to be brought to the sanctuary:
    1. Olah - Burnt Offering
    2. Minchah - Meal Offering
    3. Shelamim - Peace Offering
    4. Hattat - Sin Offering
    5. Asham - Guilt Offering
  • This Shabbat is also known as Shabbat Zachor
  • An additional portion is read on the Shabbat before Purim. It deals with the injunction to remember (zachor) the horrendous attack of Amalek upon the Israelites.
  • Its connection to Purim is related to the fact that Haman was related to the Amalekites, who were the archenemies of Israel.

Fe Fi Fo Fum I smell fairy tales!
This week, first grade has climbed our beanstalk into the land of fairy tales. As students learn the characteristics of this genre, they are also learning about story structure, plot and character development. After our study of famous fairy tales, students will write their very own tales! They will be using story boards to organize their tales. This is a wonderful project for first graders, as it allows students to use their boundless imaginations as they develop writing skills! Be sure to stop by and see our published books!

Middle School Hebrew
Mrs. Sally Jo Bronner (Morah Sarah)

Students in grades 5-7: What makes a person 'trading card worthy'? This was the question in the minds of the students as they researched famous Jews, both historical and contemporary, to learn about their lives and accomplishments.  Students were given the task to find at least five distinguished Jews who made a significant contribution to society, and defend their choices. Now, students are creating Hebrew trading cards to promote their noteworthy figures. The larger part of this project has been producing a set of trading cards in Hebrew.  After the cards are finished, we will use them to play "Guess the Hero"  and other games!

Students in eighth grade are blending technology and Hebrew in a video project. They are creating a "Welcome to The Silver Academy" video that will be used as an introduction to new Israeli students and their families. Besides offering a warm welcome, the video explains our school system and many of the new experiences students will encounter. The students planned the video, wrote the script, and are currently filming and editing. Students are thoroughly engaged in this very meaningful project.

Support Our School By Shopping at Giant...
Buy Cards at the Purim Seudah!

Pesach is coming and with it comes a great opportunity to experience the joy of 'passive tzedakah.'  Through the largesse of Giant Foods, if you shop with Giant Gift Cards from our school, we receive a full 5% back from the store.  You get the full value of your cards (use 'em til they're used up!) and the school gains from Giant.  PLEASE jump on the bandwagon and help us.  The 1% rewards program is now finished for this year, but we can still earn a lot of much-needed money - in the multiple thousands, friends!  This is a big deal!

Susan Leviton is always happy to provide you with gift cards, as are the staff in the office.  Susan will be at the Purim seudah with lots of cards on hand in denominations of $25, $50, and $100.  Her phone number is 608-0190, in case you want to 'call in an order.'

MATANOT LA'EVYONIM
 "GIFTS FOR THE POOR"

As we prepare for the joyous celebration of Purim, we remember that there are those who cannot afford to celebrate in a festive way. One of the four Mitzvot of Purim is "Gifts for the Poor" (Matanot La'evyonim). We have the opportunity to fulfill this Tzedakah in an unusually meaningful way through the organization, Od Yosef Chai, Inc.
