Good Things Happen Every Day
at The Silver Academy
Rachel Zilbering, Principal

Harrisburg might be the capital of Pennsylvania, but we all know that it is really more like a small town. Last Friday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the Silver Academy Shabbat at Chisuk Emuna.  When I was introduced to speak, the normal introduction was given "If you do not know her, this is Rachel Zilbering..."  In fact, when I looked around the room I knew every single person.  Of course, I would not have been able to say that when I started this job last July.  Our Shabbat celebration that evening was joyous and lively; the energy and enthusiasm of the Silver Academy students was on full display.  We will be having Silver Academy Shabbats at the other Harrisburg synagogues and I hope that you will be able to join us.

סיכום - Summary

  • Moses and Aaron continue to plead with Pharaoh to let the Israelites go free after the first seven plagues.
  • Pharaoh's heart was still hardened and he continues to refuse the requests of Moses and Aaron.
  • The Egyptians are then punished with the last three of the ten plagues - locusts, darkness and finally the death of all the Egyptian firstborn.
  • Terrified, Pharaoh summoned Moses and he finally lets the Israelites go.
  • The Israelites proclaim that each year, on the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month, a festival lasting seven days will be observed to recall their freedom from the Egyptian bondage.

Inside the Classroom

Middle School Hebrew
Mrs. Sally Jo Bronner (Morah Sarah)

The Israeli army is one of the best armies in the world, and every Israeli citizen enlists when they finish high school.  Our middle school students are learning all about the Israeli army and what it takes to be a soldier. They learned the words to an uplifting song about the army called מכאן  "From Here", (CLICK HERE to see video of song) and the classic song for peace, "Shir L'Shalom" (CLICK HERE to see video of song).  Students  also studied video clips put out by the Israeli Defense Forces and learned some of the words that they will need for Tironut טירונות.

Next week, one of our Israeli parents will be coming to school and put our middle school students through a modified basic training. Everyone is looking forward to discovering what profile (numeric value based on our training) they will receive.  The profile scores determine what military units students could be placed in.  Once students know this, they will each research a different branch of the army and report back to the class.  Additionally, the eighth grade will be translating a fight song into Hebrew.  Exciting times at Silver Academy!

French Language Class
Mrs. Lillian Rappaport

On Tuesday mornings, during the first half of the year, you may have heard the middle school etudiants (students) speaking Francais avec (French with) Madame Rappaport!  In between joyfully singing French songs and learning about the culture, the students mastered French greetings, polite expressions (please, thank you, excuse me, you're welcome), counting to 100 and more.

Cooking and learning about traditional French food was a favorite part of this course. In our last cooking session, the young chefs chose a French breakfast menu. Students brought in all the ingredients for this healthy petit dejeuner (breakfast), which consisted of omelettes avec fromage (cheese omelettes), croissants et chocolat chaud (croissants and hot chocolate).  Nous avons eu un trs bon jour!  (We had a very good time).

Following their French unit of study, which ended in December, middle school students began their Holocaust study. In the spring, they will have a Spanish unit of study, which, of course, will include some Spanish cooking...stay tuned!
