A SPECIAL TRADITION AT THE SILVER ACADEMY

Arthur Goldberg Memorial Lecture

In January 2001, The Silver Academy Foundation established a very special Memorial Lecture to honor the memory of Arthur L. Goldberg. Arthur was not only one of the steadfast supporters of The Silver Academy but also a very active member of the Harrisburg Jewish Community. His philanthropy and generosity improved the lives of people in both the local community and in central Pennsylvania.

Each year The Silver Academy Foundation presents an annual program to benefit the students and Silver Academy families. The programs focus on issues that were close to the heart of Arthur L. Goldberg. The list of former speakers has included judges, lawyers and a state senator.

On Thursday, December 17th Marc Moyer, Esquire, addressed our Middle School students and faculty. Marc is a lawyer living in Derry Township, and was just elected to his second term on the Derry Township Board of Supervisors. Marc talked to the students about his belief in service above self. He told about his experience at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Due to his efforts he was able to help successfully establish a beautiful Jewish Chapel at the Military Academy. He also served as an Army Captain and a helicopter pilot. He enthralled our students with his first hand description of the fall of the Iron Curtain while he served in the famed 11th Armor Cavalry Regiment in Fulda, West Germany.

Marc challenged our students to go out and "Make the Right Choices" to emulate the life style of people like Arthur Goldberg of blessed memory. It is easy to summarize his message in the words of the great Rabbi Hillel. "If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? Yet, if I am for myself only, what am I? And if not now, when?"

SHABBAT SHALOM  שבת שלום -

Inside the Classroom

Third Grade Judaics
Mr. Ellis Rosenberg

The Third Grade has jumped right back in the saddle after their well-deserved winter break. In Chumash, we have studied how Abraham and Sarah moved to the area known as Gerrar after the destruction of Sodom and Amorah, and get themselves into trouble right away. In our Shabbat M'vorchim workbook, we learned how Hillel, one of our greatest Rabbis, couldn't afford tuition to go to Yeshiva, and how he didn't let that stop him from learning Torah. In Parashat Hashavuah, we're learning about the Exodus from Egypt. The class asked a good question...Why are we learning about the Exodus now when Passover isn't for a few months?

Looking forward, Tu B'shvat  (New Year of the Trees) is fast approaching, and we haven't even had snow yet! What's that all about? Israel has had more snow this winter than we have here in Harrisburg. Students will be planting veggies to honor Tu B'shvat in January. The plants will be started indoors, of course, and transferred outdoors in warmer weather.

The third grade will be performing for the early childhood center soon, and we are in the process of adding another song (in Hebrew, of course) to our repertoire. The students enjoy spending time with the preschoolers.

Art Class - A Sampling of Student Projects
Mrs. Debra Rietmulder

Kindergarten -
Multi Media fall tree project using tissue paper and paint. Multiple tools were used while painting...the trees were painted using a paint brush; the leaves were painted with sponges; the grass was painted using a tooth brush.

Grades 4 and 5 -
Leaf prints were made using white tempra paint. Tempra (of many colors) was then placed around each leaf using the side of the paint brush bristles. Students used a radiating pattern of colors to show brush control.

Grade 1 -
Overlapping circles were painted using the primary or secondary colors.

Grade 2 -
Monoprints of the river and an island full of fall trees. The reflection of the leaves shows the mirror image of the trees in the water.

Grade 3 -
Op art project using black and white, plus, the primary colors and complementary colors (red and green, purple and yellow, blue and orange).

Grade 2 -
Study of one point perspective landscapes. Use of marker, crayon or colored pencils.
