Good Things Happen Every
Day at The Silver Academy
Rachel Zilbering, Principal

This week has been so much fun! On Monday, many of our students performed at the annual "Chanukah at the Capitol".  They were all wonderful representatives of The Silver Academy.

Since we are a "day school" and not a "night school" we light our Chanukah candles at the start of the school day in the lobby of the JCC.  Each day, a different member of the Student Council lights the candles and leads us in prayer, song and dance.  If you did not see the video, take a look. But a warning, you might get dizzy watching.

I am looking forward to the Celebration of Light and Learning this evening at 6:45 in the Mary Sachs Auditorium.  The entire school has been working hard getting ready for their performances.  I hope you can join us.

Happy Chanukah and Shabbat Shalom

Second Grade General Studies
Mrs. Brandy Hurley

This week, second graders are trying their hand at poetry. We have been discussing what qualifies as a poem. So far, we have tried adding different elements to our
own poetry such as alliteration,  onomatopoeias, rhythm and similes. We are learning how to write poems, Haiku and Limericks.  Check out one of our most recent, (and very timely), acrostic poems!

Middle School Judaics
Rabbi Yoseph Gewirtz
[email protected]

The Judaic Studies Division at the Silver Academy Middle School recently upgraded its Jewish Literacy Program. The Jewish Literacy Program was conceived two years ago as an opportunity to include instruction in topics for which there was not adequate time during the school day.  By utilizing what has become known as "flipped education", using homework as instructional time and reinforcing the learning in school, the Judaic Middle School curriculum has been significantly enriched.

Until recently, Rabbi Gewirtz prepared the instructional material which was presented through the ProProfs  Quiz Maker web site.   But, since Thanksgiving, the instructional material has been coming from an exciting new source, "Torah Live".  Torah Live's mission is (the following quote is from its website) "to create cutting-edge multimedia presentations that communicate Jewish values in a non-preachy, well organized, and energetic manner".  Links to the short Torah Live videos are found within the ProProfs nightly presentation at Rabbi Gewirtz's wiki.  As before, a quiz question is included to evaluate the students' learning.  The next day in school, all that is required is a 3 minute review of the home lesson.  The first topic was Chanukah.  The students report being pleased with "their NEW JLQ"!

We are Thankful for Parent Support!

The third, fourth and fifth grades would like to thank Bob and Marla Johnson and Mrs. Deborah Johnson for graciously sponsoring the Chanukiot (Chanukah Menorahs) which the students assembled and decorated. These Chanukiot are fully functional, and many students are lighting their own Chanukiah for the first time!

A special thank you to Avi Harringer and his family! They saved labels from SunnyD containers to earn  20 FREE books for our class! First Graders are thrilled to have these new books and have already chosen some favorites!
