Good Things Happen Every
Day at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering, Principal

As we look forward to Thanksgiving next week, I want to take a moment to reflect on some of the things that I am thankful for at The Silver Academy.
  • I am thankful for our students, who walk through the door each day ready to learn.
  • I am thankful for our teachers, who bring information to life.
  • I am thankful for our generous donors.
  • I am thankful for our community, who are here in good times and bad.
  • I am thankful for our parents and their unwavering commitment to the school.
Please share your thanks with your family and friends.  Writing down your thanks and saying it out loud is challenging but very meaningful.

  • This week's Parsha tells of Jacob leaving Be'er-Sheba on his way to his Uncle Laban's house in Charan.
  • On his way he lays down to sleep and dreams of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, and G-d's angels were going up and down the ladder.
  • Jacob continues on to Charan and stops by a well.
  • He meets Rachel and falls in love with her.
  • Laban tells Jacob that he must work for seven years in order to marry Rachel.
  • Laban tricks Jacob and he marries Leah.
  • Jacob works another seven years in order to marry Rachel.
  • Jacob's family increases, and he becomes very rich from working for Laban.
  • After 21 years he decides to leave Charan and begin his journey back to Canaan.
Notable Mitzvah (Commandment) in the Parsha
  • Ma'aser - Tithing - Jacob promised to give to G-d one - tenth of all the wealth that G-d would bestow upon him (Genesis 28:22).

Inside the Classroom

Ganeinu
Mrs.Tammy Reid (Morah Tamara)

We have been learning the names of colors in Hebrew. We are also learning color theory, because why learn one thing when you can learn two, or three or four? This week we mixed ADOM/red and TZAHOV/yellow and found it makes KATOM/orange. For some of the kids this was a real revelation. The kids are truly enjoying experimenting with color. They love to see how black and white affect a paint color or how mixing different amounts of different colors changes the results. Science and art go hand in hand in Ganeinu.

Third Grade General Studies

Did you know that Christiano Ronaldo had to have a heart operation when he was 15 years old, and after a full recovery, was able to play in three world cups? Were you aware that Sonia Sotomayor volunteered at a local hospital and helped Spanish speaking patients talk to their doctors and nurses? Most of our third grade students did not know these interesting stories either before entering the classroom on November 6th.

For students in third grade, one of the highlights of the year is the book report project. Each student chose someone interesting, past or present, read a biography book about their subject, and composed a written book report.  Lastly, students used costumes and props while giving a creative presentation to share what they had learned about their special person. We learned about the lives of some fascinating people... Anne Frank, Malala Yousafzai, Sonia Sotomayor, Michael Jordan, Clara Barton, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Kudos to each third grade student for a job well done!
