Good Things Happen Every Week
at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

It's true that summer is almost here, but we have two full weeks left at The Silver Academy and we are going to make them count!  Each day as I walk around, I hear math lessons, reader's theater, lessons in Chumash, Hebrew songs and so much more.  The students have shown great dedication all year!

Tonight is the Celebration of Learning, which will begin promptly at 6:45 in The Mary Sachs Auditorium.  If you want to catch a glimpse of what our school is all about, I encourage you to attend.  I look forward to seeing you tonight

Have a good weekend and a chag sameach.

Inside and Outside the Classroom

2nd Grade Judaics

Mrs. Aviva Woodland (Morah Aviva)

Last Wednesday evening, Kitah Bet reached an important milestone as they received Chumash B'reishit at the Chumash Celebration on May 13th. Community Rabbis, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends enjoyed the songs and presentation of the play in Hebrew "L'An Halchu b'Lech L'cha?" ("Where did they go in Lech L'cha"). The play was based on a Midrash of Avraham as a young boy. In the play, Avraham realizes that the idols of his father Terach are not G-d and shows his great trust in G-d in order to leave the place of his birth and go to the place (land of Israel) that G-d will show him. Students played the roles of Avram, Sarai, Terach, and narrator, and the voice of HaShem was heard from behind a screen! After the students received their chumashim, the evening culminated as they opened up their new chumashim for the first time and learned Chumash with their parents.

Back in the classroom, students are excited to read Chumash using their new chumashim. They are building a Mishkan (Tent of Meeting) and the tents of the 12 shvatim (tribes) of B'nei Israel as they learn Parashat B'Midbar. Kitah Bet has been counting the weeks and days to Shavuot. Kitah Bet wishes everyone Chag Shavuot Samayach!

6th Grade Hebrew

Mrs. Alla Fligelman (Morah Alla)

It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. We are concluding our 6th grade Tal Sela program with the final topic "What Is Homeland?". Through the psukim from the Tanach, songs, poems and stories, we are learning what has been connecting Jewish people throughout different generations with the Land of Israel. We are also studying  the "Declaration of Independence" of the State of Israel, including it's history, who wrote it, and the values included in the Declaration that were part of creating the modern State of Israel.

Science Fair

Mrs. Susan Gaughan

Two Silver Academy students traveled to Penn State on Monday to compete at the state level of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) competition. Batsheva Gewirtz and Dalia Shvartsman each earned a spot in the competition by placing first in the regional level of PJAS competition back in February.

The girls worked extensively to prepare for their presentation, which included a speech and slide show. Congratulations to Dalia for earning a first place award and Batsheva for earning a second place award!  Wow...what amazing accomplishments!

Recycling Club Field Trip

Mrs. Cheryl Sinoway

The Recycling Club had the privilege of visiting Hope Springs Farm on May 13th. The Farm's mission is, "to provide adults with intellectual disabilities meaningful work on a farm and joyful group activities." Our students learned about the farm's composting system and had the opportunity to visit with all of the animals. We even collected fresh brown eggs from the chicken coop.

You may want to join the Recycling Club next year! It is fun, educational, and we end the school with a terrific field trip!
