Good Things Happen Every Week
at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

This past week was very special at the Silver Academy. On Monday, our 7th and 8th grade students left for their Israel trip.  At lunch time, we had a whole school sendoff including all of the students' families.  I think we all felt their excitement! On Wednesday morning, the school held an important ceremony for Yom Hazikaron (Israel's Memorial Day).  We began by singing Hatikvah and listening to the same siren that is played in Israel. The ceremony was led by our 6th grade class who read poems and sang songs.  We also heard from Lt. Col. Levy about his service in the IDF.  The ceremony was somber and emotional as we remembered all of those who have served. On Thursday morning, the tone changed significantly as we celebrated Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day).  Although it was very blustery, we had a great time singing and dancing!  We heard from Col. Bluth who shared his own personal experiences about his family and Israel.  All of the grades participated in the festivities which continued into the school day.

Happy 67th Birthday, Israel!

Third and fourth grades are always so busy. Between the holidays and our curriculum we try to incorporate some "fun activities" into our days. This week we took time to learn how we can help make a healthier environment. In honor of Earth Day this week (Wednesday, April 22), we talked about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle at school. Students were given the homework assignment to compile a list of ways their families can reduce, reuse and recycle at home. Each student came to school the next day with a very detailed list. We then went to the computer lab and used the list to create a word cloud (graphic representation of words) to remind us of our commitment to taking care of the earth. We used the website Tagxedo, which allowed us to make our word cloud in the shape of a tree, flower or other shape that we associate with Earth Day. The projects turned out amazing. Stop by and check them out on the bulletin board outside our classroom.

7th & 8th Grade - Israel Update

Nachum Chasan

On this past Monday afternoon, after a school-wide send off, a group of enthusiastic and energized 7th and 8th grade students from the Silver Academy left for a two week voyage of discovery and exploration to the land of Israel. You can imagine the excitement and anticipation among our students as they have longed and dreamt about this experience for many years. Our students joined with students from the Addlestone Hebrew Academy of Charleston, South Carolina, for this amazing journey.

This annual Silver Academy Israel trip represents the culmination of an educational and experiential journey that began for our students in Ganienu, almost nine years ago. Throughout their years at the Silver Academy, our students have acquired a love of Hebrew as the language of the Jewish people, an understanding of Israel's multi-faceted cultures, and the role that Israel plays in their own identity, as well as the identity of Jews the world over.

Our trip to Israel ensures that our students not only focus on the mystical Israel, but for two intense weeks have access to its people, culture, and collective enterprise. Our students are meeting Israelis their age; they have interacted with soldiers, visited historic sites, utilized their Hebrew language skills in a natural environment, and have celebrated both Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) and Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) in Jerusalem.

May the Staub family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Students Supporting Students

Three Silver Academy students showed their creativity and generosity when they turned a fun activity into a fund raiser for charity! Erin Brodsky, Sarah Merwin, and Sarah Weinstein enjoyed knitting scarves. They decided to use their knitting skills to raise money for a charity. To make the endeavor more personal, they chose to donate the money to the 7th and 8th grade students for their trip to Israel.

Initially, Sarah, Sarah, and Erin worked to "get the word out". They spent several hours one evening texting everyone they knew to promote the sale. The trio thought it was possible that they could raise $50-$100. Friends and family responded in a big way...the girls far exceeded their expectations and raised $300! Following hours of knitting, scarf delivery, and money collection, Sarah, Sarah, and Erin were able to present a "big check" to the 7th and 8th grade classes during an assembly. Kudos to these kind-hearted kids!
