Good Things Happen Every Week
at The Silver Academy

Jaclyn Rubin

Admissions and Recruitment Director

On Monday, January 19th, The Silver Academy hosted it's annual Bring a Friend to School Day/Mitzvah Day, and what a wonderful day it was! Students and friends participated in a day of fun and community service. Each grade created their own service projects. From writing cards and collecting stuffed animals for residents of The Jewish Home, to performing plays about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and painting Tzedakah boxes, students gave back in a variety of ways. We even held a Pantene Pro V Beautiful Lengths hair cutting ceremony for those who donated 8" of hair to create wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Three students and one staff member went "under the scissors" during an assembly with the rest of the student body and faculty watching and supporting them. A college-age friend also donated and sent her hair to us for donation.

We had a wonderful day of sharing, caring and friendship with our special guests!

Kindergarten Visits The Dead Sea

Morah Sarah Bronner

Morah Sarah came back from her visit to Israel with lots of treats for Kindergarten. She bought special chairs and crowns for the Immas and Abbas of Shabbat (Shabbat moms and dads), Hebrew books, a beautiful wooden Alef-Bet puzzle, and other Israeli treats. She also brought back something to help the class truly feel Israel!

Kindergarten spent an afternoon imagining that they were at the Dead Sea, enjoying the nice weather and the therapeutic mineral mud that Morah Sarah brought all the way from Israel! Parents helped the children spread mud on their feet, and as they let it dry, Morah Sarah read Hebrew books to the students. The end of the "trip" was quite exciting as students tried to get the mud off by soaking and scrubbing in successive buckets of water. It was tough!  The kids loved their visit to the Dead Sea and can't wait to see what other Israeli treats are in store for them!

A New Face at the Silver Academy

We offer a big welcome to Chastity Cottingham-Frye, our new kindergarten and ganeinu aide! You may know Chastity as the mother of Clancy, who is in third grade here at the Silver Academy, or as one of our Girls Scout leaders. She has also been a regular volunteer at our school for the past four years.
Chastity is no stranger to elementary education, having worked as a substitute teacher for three years, and also worked for the Lancaster-Lebanon IU as a paraeducator for Autistic Support classrooms. She is a graduate of Lebanon Valley College with a double major in Political Science and Religion.

Outside of school, Chastity, her husband, Tim, and Clancy, are members of Temple Ohev Sholom, where Chastity serves as Vice President of the Sisterhood. On a fun note, every year during Purim, Chastity performs in Ohev Sholom's Purim spiel. This year she will be playing Esther.
