Good Things Happen Every Week
at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

First, my apologies that the link to the Cornell University article last week was not correct.  Here is the correct link:

Second, what a week! Monday's Bring a Friend to School Day / Mitzvah Day was a resounding success.  The students in each grade worked on various projects that incorporated both the idea of service and mitzvot.  Three students and one staff member underwent a transformation by cutting at least eight inches of hair to donate to Pantene Great Lenghts!  Lest you think it was all work, the students did have lots of fun, too.  The entire school participated in a Zumba workout taught by our Physical Education teacher Nicole Sunderland (I think I even saw Mr. Chasan dancing).

The snow caused a little bit of headache and schedule change, but our 7th and 8th graders have their science fair projects at school and are ready for the Science Fair this evening.

Plans for the William Close & the Earth Harp Collective concert are moving along full force, I encourage you to buy tickets soon.

  • Terrified, Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and he finally lets the Israelites go.

1st & 2nd Grades Adopt a Whale!

Mrs. Brandy Hurley

During the past few weeks, first and second graders worked together to raise money for a very exciting Mitzvah project. Our goal was to raise enough money to adopt a whale! I am proud to say that we exceeded our goal of $97! The money will be put to good use, supporting Pacific Whale researchers and education programs. On MLK Day we created posters about how everyone can help whales. You can learn more about our whale, Lucinda, at www.pacificwhale.org/content/lucinda

Thank you to all the families and individuals who helped us reach our goal! Together we can make a difference!

7th and 8th Grades Judaics

Rabbi Yosef Gewirtz

"Can we study more Gemara?"

That was the reaction of Eighth Grade student, Tony McVey, to the inaugural section of "Higher Talmud" that the Seventh/Eighth Grade class recently completed.  The subject from tractate Bava Kama was the extent of liability of someone who finds a lost object for that object while he attempts to find its owner.  The topic was chosen as a further expansion of the theme of liability found in Parshat Mishpatim, presently being studied by the class during Chumash period. The class enjoyed the debate and analysis contained in the selection and were assured by their teacher, Rabbi Gewirtz, that they were "liable" to continue the study of Gemara in the near future.

Middle School Pre Algebra

Mrs. Jane Dalton

Students illustrated a critical thinking problem by finding the minimum and maximum length of the third side of a triangle.
