Good Things Happen Every Week
at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

I think that every time I walk into a Silver Academy classroom and hear students speaking Hebrew, it surprises and amazes me!  How do they know all of these words?  How do they speak with such an Israeli accent?  It goes without saying that learning a second language as a young child is the ideal time to start.  I am linking to an article from Cornell University that summarizes the benefits and dispels some of the myths.  This is a short and worthwhile read.

So, is it too late for the rest of us?  I am going to speak optimistically and say NO! If you have a background in Hebrew from religious school, try checking a word of the day app or this word of the day website.  I have been posting a word of the day on our new electronic signboard and am looking for submissions!  Look into taking a class, there is information about one below. And all this being said, I'm giving it a try too. This March, I will be getting up my nerve to participate in a woman's megillah reading at the JCC.  I have a short part, but you have to start somewhere!

  • Aaron and Moses appear before Pharaoh to request freedom for the Israelites
  • Pharaoh reacts by becoming more spiteful and mean. He makes it harder for the Israelites
  • Moses and Aaron go before Pharaoh a second time
  • Aaron casts his rod (מטה) before Pharaoh and it turned into a snake
  • Pharaoh's magicians did the same, but Aaron's rod swallowed theirs
  • Pharaoh refused to yield and let the Israelites go
  • G-d sends seven plagues (מכות) upon Egypt and still Pharaoh's hart remained hard.

Kindergarten General Studies

Ms. Alison Brandecker

Our Kindergartners are amazing!  As we come to the end of the first half of the school year, it is evident that these students have worked hard to develop the necessary skills to become effective readers and writers. Their writing has grown along with their vocabulary...They now have learned about 40 sight words! They have also learned to read and write more than half the letters of the alphabet and numbers 0-10, which has led to reading books. Students have recently begun studying books through small reading groups.

Our current math topic, 2D and 3D shapes, is one that Kindergartners find particularly exciting. They have enjoyed learning about these shapes by building them with popsicle sticks and taking pictures of real-life objects with these shapes in the classroom and halls. Also, students are proud to say words like, rectangular prism and sphere. I can't believe how much our Kindergarten class has learned in a few months!

5th Grade Hebrew

Morah Alla Fligelman

It is hard to believe, that in this cold weather, our 5th Grade Hebrew class is talking about spring, trees, and fruits. In several weeks we will be celebrating Tu B'Shvat - New Year of the trees. We are learning about the history of this holiday, where and when it was established, what kind of traditions people had in the past as compared to how we celebrate today. We will also learn all about the Tu B'Shvat Seder and then have our own celebration with 4 cups of "wine", and 7 kinds of fruits of Eretz Israel, and of course, lots of songs.

7th-8th Grade Trip to Israel

This spring our 7th and 8th grade classes will travel to Israel! (They are so excited!) Please consider helping us fund our trip by participating in one or more of these fundraisers.
