Good Things Happen Every Week
at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

Welcome back to school, Silver Academy students!  I hope that everyone had a restful winter break and is recharged for the second half of the school year.  Of course many of us (myself included) make New Year's resolutions.  On January 19th, we are going to make keeping a generalized resolution easy by having a "Mitzvah Day".  On Mitzvah Day, students and their friends (it's also bring a friend to school day) will have the opportunity to take part in a number of different service projects and activities.

There is still time to be involved and to bring a friend, contact Jackie Rubin, jrubin@silveracademypa.org, for a permission slip.  Since many parents will not be working that day, I encourage you to embark on your own day of service or stop by to see what we're doing here.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"  So one day at a time, we will try to follow these important words.

Happy New Year to all!

סיכום - Summary

  • This weeks Torah portion begins the second book of the Bible. It begins with a listing of names (שמות) of the sons of Israel that came down to Egypt.
  • Joseph and his brothers had lived peacefully in Egypt.
  • A new Pharaoh arose and said: "The Israelites are too numerous, they have too much power in our kingdom!"
  • Pharaoh orders all Israelite male children be drowned.
  • Amram and Jochebed, had a baby son and they hid him in a basket at the edge of the Nile River.
  • There he was found by Pharaoh's daughter, who called him Moses (the one drawn out of water).
  • Moses grows up in Pharaoh's palace.
  • Moses kills an Egyptian taskmaster who was beating an Israelite slave. Moses escaped from Pharaoh to the land of Midian. There he tended the flocks of Jethro.
  • G-d speaks to Moses out of a burning bush (סנה) and tells him that he and his brother Aaron will liberate the Israelites from Egyptian slavery.

3rd Grade General Studies

Ms. Bonni Teplitz-Roseman

It is hard to believe that we have completed one half of our school year! The past months were filled with learning many new skills in reading, writing, and math. One of the favorite activities of Third Grade was their Biography Book Report. Each child chose a famous person to learn about. They read a biography about their person and wrote a book report about the person's life and accomplishments. Finally, they gave an oral report to the class and guests, including dressing as their person and using props. This year we learned about George Washington, Jane Goodall, Orville Wright, Helen Keller, and Anne Frank.
