A Season of Activity at
The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

One of the most special aspects of Jewish life is seeing different generations come together.  We look to older generations for wisdom and younger generations for energy.  I know that some of the most special family gatherings are those where multiple generations are present. Within The Silver Academy and the Harrisburg Jewish Community, we are fortunate to have many of these opportunities available.

This week, Morah Aviva's kitah aleph class volunteered at Jewish Family Services to assemble Chanukah packages for seniors. The Kindergarten and the Brenner ELC Pre-Kindergarten class joined together for the Chabad Olive Press Show. This afternoon, Andrea Weikert organized a chocolate menorah making program where a senior was paired with an older Silver Academy student and an ELC student.

Tonight is The Celebration of Light and Learning where students will be performing songs, dances and plays. Please invite a grandparent or friend to this happy night.

As we come to the end of 2014, I wish all of our Silver Academy families and friends my best wishes for a happy and healthy 2015.

Inside the Classroom

Kindergarten Judaics

Morah Sarah Bronner

Kindergarten is enjoying the season...learning Chanukah songs, dances, and playing a variety of Chanukah themed games to learn the story of brave Judah Macabee, as well as the Jewish symbols that we equate with Chanukah today.  We have also been practicing for our performance at the Celebration of Light and Learning. The children are so excited! We hope that you are ready for a great night!
Kindergarten has also welcomed Morah Rachel as a helper in our classroom.  Some of us already knew her as a Girl Scout, Daisy, leader and as a helper in the lunch room. Morah Sarah had the pleasure of teaching her daughter, Clancy, in Kindergarten.
Our classroom puppet friend, Bentzi, will be making a trip to Israel with Morah Sarah during winter break. They will be visiting Israeli friends and favorite places. The students can't wait to hear all about their experiences!

2nd Grade General Studies

Mrs. Brandy Hurley

Second grade has been hard at work writing nonfiction! We are nearing the end of our second unit: Nonfiction chapter books. Throughout this unit, students learned many writing techniques that published authors use. They learned how to plan their books by talking with a friend and using a table of contents. Students also learned to use a more precise, content specific vocabulary. Throughout the unit, the class studied mentor texts, looking for ways to make their own writing more interesting and detailed. Some students used picture captions, pop out words and diagrams to elaborate their topics. We can't wait to celebrate all the writing we have done in this unit!
