Good things happen every week
at The Silver Academy

Rachel Zilbering

Assistant Principal

A few weeks ago, Mrs. Hurley and I traveled to Washington DC for the Annual NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) Convention.  With my professional background as a math teacher, I felt at times like a fish out of water.  But here's the thing, regardless of our professions, we are all readers and writers.

Today I am going to focus on writing, which seems so easy...all you need is a piece of paper and a pencil. Of course that is often easier said than done.  One of the great things about the NCTE Convention was hearing about just a few of the hundreds (maybe even thousands) of great websites and apps that are available to inspire students to write and help improve their writing skills.

The website that I'm looking at today is www.storybird.com.  Quoting the website "Storybird reverses visual storytelling by starting with the image and "unlocking" the story inside. Explore artists, get inspired, and write."

Guess what else: it's fun!  I played around with different images and worked at writing a poem in the suggested format.  You can also write longform books or picture books.  Check out the website with your student and start writing today.  Send me your creations and I will start a bulletin board of our work.

Inside the Classroom

4th Grade

Ms. Bonni Teplitz-Roseman

The Fourth Grade has been having a wonderful year. We have enjoyed welcoming Hallel Bluth to the class and are so glad she is here learning with us.

Recently, we completed a book report

project that has been a highlight of our year so far. Each student chose someone interesting, past or present, and read a biography book about them. Not only did the students compose a written book report, but they also made scrapbooks illustrating their special person's life from birth through

adult life, as well as their accomplishments. In culmination, students used costumes and props while giving a creative presentation to share what they had learned about their special person. Fourth Grade truly enjoyed this project. They had fun while learning and being creative!

Physical Education

Miss Nicole Sunderland

Students in grades 3 through 8 are learning the importance of exercising everyday and some practical ways to include exercise in their daily routine. During our four-week Fitness Unit, students attempted to meet a goal of 60 minutes of exercise per day, the recommended amount for good health. Students kept a fitness log and recorded activity time at home and at school. In order to be entered in the log, an activity had to take at least 20 minutes and include warm up, game, cool down and stretching. The unit culminated with an awards ceremony recognizing each student's level of completion.

Ganeinu

Morah Tamara Reid

Each week the Ganeinu class learns a new letter of the aleph-bet. Last week we learned the letter Vav. The Hebrew word "vav" (spelled with two vavs) means hook. This seemed like a great reason for our entire class, and teacher, to dress up like pirates! Watch out for our "Vavs".  This has been done in Ganeinu for five years. The students find it so memorable that when I come to school dressed like a pirate, students in upper grades greet me with, "Letter vav today?" Arrrrgh we learning the letter vav? You bet!
