SHABBAT PARSHAT B'Har - Leviticus 25:1 - 26:2

Summary of Parshat  B'Har

The Laws of Shemittah are given. Shemittah, or sabbatical year, occurs every seventh year in the Land of Israel where the fields are to be treated as if they are ownerless. No seeds are sown, no produce is harvested, no fruit trees are pruned. The land is to remain fallow.

Among the reasons given for this sabbatical year are as follows:

  • It teaches us to have faith in Hashem. We sometimes tend to think that we can take all the credit for our success. When we see that Hashem provides for us even when we don't work the fields, it helps strengthen our faith.
  • During the shemittah year, any one can come and help himself to the produce which has grown naturally. This helps us realize the importance of sharing.
  • After seven cycles of seven years, the fiftieth year is known as Yovel, or the Jubilee year. There are many laws pertaining to the Jubilee year. The famous saying engraved on the Liberty Bell, "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof" is taken from this section of  Parshat B'har.
  • Some of the laws about dealing with the poor, such as not charging interest are listed.
