Fourth Grade General Studies with Mrs. Heit
One of the first nice days the fourth graders were able to play outside provided the children as opportunity to perform a mitzvah. Armed with gloves and trash bags, the children cleaned up the perimeter of the playground and garden. Their faces tell you that even yard work can be fun! They have been busy in the classroom, as well. Their reading selections have taken them in many different directions which include writing a mystery to writing their name in Egyptian hieroglyphics. We're examining the important part our state played in the American Revolution. They have been fascinated by Washington's story crossing the Delaware and wintering in Valley Forge.
Students Earn Awards at the
Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair
Recently our eighth grade students participated in the annual Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair held at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. What a wonderful showing our students made! They presented their science fair projects and answered questions from a panel of judges. Miriam Reid and Simona Shuman received first place awards for their projects. Yael Muroff, Ari Dym, and Hallel Cheskis received second place awards for their projects. Anya Fox received an honorable mention for her project. In addition to her first place award, Miriam was selected as a Nominee for the 2014 Broadcom Masters (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) Award. This is a program of Society for Science and the Public. This extraordinary achievement is awarded to the top 10% of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade participants at the CASEF fair. Miriam will now complete an online application in order to participate in the national Broadcom MASTERS competition. Entries will be judged during the summer and the top 300 national semifinalists will be announced in September. Thirty finalists are selected from among the semifinalists to receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC to showcase their projects, compete in teams, and visit historical sites and organizations that celebrate innovation through science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Miriam also received the American Statistical Association Award as the first place winner in the Junior Division in the field of statistics. She also earned the Office of Naval Research Science and Technology Award in the form of a certificate and a $50.00 cash award. Simona Shuman also received an additional special award. She earned the Plant Science Category Award for having the highest score in all the Junior Division Plant Science projects. She received a $100.00 cash award for this accomplishment. We are so proud of all the students' accomplishments!
