Fifth Grade Social Studies with Mr. Hart
In Social Studies, fifth grade has begun studying the American Revolution. In addition to our regular classroom learning activities about the subject, students are viewing the animated series "Liberty's Kids," which tells the story of the Revolution through the perspective of fictional young people who might have lived through this important period in American history. The students are enjoying the series and eagerly await viewing the next episode!
Third Grade Judaics with Mr. Rosenberg
The third graders have certainly been keeping busy since we last "chatted". In addition to continuing our Chumash studies, about Abraham being told by Sarah that Ishmael was a bad influence on Isaac, we learned why the month of Adar occurs twice this year. We found out that there are actually four times during the Jewish year that we have a New Year celebration. Among the other highlights for the third grade are the plants and letters that we made for the residents of the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. Our third grade also did a super job of leading the Silver Academy in our most recent Kabbalat Shabbat celebration. |
How well do you know our faculty and staff?
When you hear "Sochi", most likely you think of skiing, skating and the 2014 Winter Olympics. One of our staff members, however, has memories of childhood hiking and camping trips in the hills of Sochi, and swimming in the nearby Black Sea.
Do you know which staff member has these childhood experiences? |

Which years did you attend The Silver Academy? 1990-1992
Where did you grow up? Susquehanna Township Where did you go to school after The Silver Academy? Herbert Hoover Elementary School in Susquehanna Township School District (now Thomas Holtzman Elementary)
Where do you live now? I live in the city of Harrisburg with my husband, Josh, and our English bulldog, Boss.
What do you do? In the beginning of 2013, my husband and I opened Smoke, a local, organic, modern bbq restaurant, sourcing our ingredients from local family-owned farms. My husband, a trained chef, runs the kitchen and is the creative mind behind all of our menu items.
What was your favorite class at The Silver Academy? I loved math and still do.
Who was your best friend at The Silver Academy? Noaa Reuvenny and Rachel Crimmel. We have been friends since the age of 2, and I'm proud to say that both ladies are still very much a part of my life. We've been lucky enough to celebrate beautiful occasions together, including weddings and other simchas. What is your current favorite food and what was your favorite lunch at The Silver Academy? My current favorite food is avocado. I just can't get enough of them. As for my favorite lunch at the Academy, I really don't remember eating too much. I do remember enjoying the buttered noodles, which still happen to be a comforting favorite of mine.
How many times were you sent to the principal's office? I can't say I went to the principal's office, however, I could be blocking that from my memory. What was a favorite memory of The Silver Academy? I remember the day that Valeriya Litvak and the other students from Russia came to the Academy. Funny how things work out....Valeriya and I are still the best of friends. She was one of the many Yeshiva friends who attended my wedding, and I've been lucky enough to watch her daughter, grow from an infant to now a beautiful little girl.
What is your favorite sports team? hahahha...good question. I honestly could care less about sports. I root for the Ravens and Lakers by default, as my husband is a huge fan of both.
What was your favorite activity at the JCC? I loved going downstairs to the fitness area after school and finding my grandfather, Howard Figowitt, may he rest in peace, working out, as he did everyday. He always made sure to have extra change in his gym bag so that I could grab a snack from the vending machines, and he always had enough for the friend I brought with me too!
Who was your biggest role model in Harrisburg? My family...their guidance and support through the years has molded me into the woman I am today. I couldn't be more thankful for them!
