First Grade Judaics with Morah Aviva

With Chagai Tishrei (Festivals of the Jewish month) behind us, Kitah Alef has turned our energies towards learning with Ariot, the Lion of Hebrew Letters. We've been singing many songs, "Shir Alefbet", "Shalom Ariot", and "Shalom Alef". We read the story "Shalom Ariot". Students enjoyed acting out the story, pretending to be Ariot as they stepped out of a make-believe televizia (TV). Students made their own keterim (crowns) like Ariot's keter. We have been using the Hebrew words Ani (I), Abba (father), Saba (grandfather), Arone (closet) and Adome (red). In this week's Torah Portion, Va'yera, we learned that Avraham and Sarah demonstrate the importance of doing Chesed (kindness) as they welcomed guests into their tent. We are looking forward to celebrating Kabbalat Shabbat in Kitah Alef, doing Chesed and welcoming guests to our own Shabbat table!

Shabbat Shalom from Morah Aviva and Kitah Alef!

Middle School Learns about Money Management

Middle School students are taking part in a Money Management Seminar where they are being introduced to topics such as compounding, inflation, risk management, saving, investing, savvy shopping, banking, credit, and more. The course is being taught by Mr. Martin Lowy, who said, "Parents would be surprised how interested their children are with these adult topics."

Martin has had a long-term connection to the Silver Academy. His father, Joseph Lowy, managed the Silver Academy's food service department for many years beginning in the late 1970's. Two of Martin's grandchildren, Lacey and Spencer Markowitz, attended the Silver Academy. He currently serves on the Silver Academy Foundation board and also has served on the Silver Academy board.

Lowy is a retired partner of a Harrisburg area CPA firm and also a retired Senior Professor of the Harrisburg Community College where he taught corporate and personal finance for 35 years. For the past 10 years he has been operating a nationwide online family budgeting and coaching service: yourbudgetcoach.com. For many years, Lowy has been doing financial literacy presentations for local schools including the Harrisburg School District, but this is his first time at the Silver Academy.

Norman Gras

Which years did you attend The Silver Academy?
I graduated in 1968 from the ninth grade (the school went to ninth grade back then).

Where did you grow up? We lived on Green Street near the newly built Chisuk Emuna. It was a great location near the JCC, and there was a hill to sled down in winter and a place to roll down in summer.

Where did you go to school after The Silver Academy? Talmudical Academy in Baltimore then Yeshiva University in Manhattan

What do you do now?  Catering, including catering for the Silver Academy - www.normangras.com

What was your favorite activity outside of school? While the rest of the guys were on the basketball team, I was on the coed gymnastics team.

Who was your favorite teacher at The Silver Academy? Mrs. Schiffman taught us to get our clothes ready before we went to bed and did not get upset if we could not say the words emancipation proclamation. Plus we were all taller than she was even in fifth grade.  Also, Rabbi Goldberg had a game where he would let us read something in the Siddur, and he could tell us where it was located.

What was your favorite lunch at school as a student, and now as the school caterer? We had kugel, tuna, and chocolate pudding when I was in school. Now it is pizza, which we never had back then.

Do you have any favorite memories about the school?  Back then all the teachers ate lunch together in what is now the computer lab, which gave us adequate time to escape the building, including walking on the river when it was frozen.

What was your favorite thing to do at the JCC? Iddy Biddy Basketball League on Saturday night or Sunday Funday

Who was your biggest role model?  Besides my parents, my older brother Moey, who paved the way with his good reputation
