הסכום - Summary

  • This week's torah portion continues to describe the laws of sacrifice for the individual, for the congregation and for the priests.
  • All the Israelites were assembled before the Tabernacle, when Moses made it holy and anointed Aaron as High Priest.
  • Moses told Aaron and his sons: "For seven days you must not leave the Tabernacle. In this time, you will make yourself holy for service to G-d."
  • On the eighth day, Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and said: "Offer a sacrifice upon the Altar before G-d." Aaron did so. Then Moses and Aaron blessed the Children of Israel.
  • SHABBAT HAGADOL - the Shabbat preceding the festival of Passover is designated as the Great Sabbath. This is in commemoration of the great miracle involving the paschal offering that occurred on the Shabbat preceding the exodus from Egypt.

Inside the Classroom - 3rd Grade

The Third Grade continues to work very hard. Since the last time we were featured in The SIlver Summary, we have completed many math topics. We completed fractions, (adding and subtracting with like denominators and reducing to lowest common denominator)decimals, and measuring using metric and linear measurements.

We have been reading some wonderful stories in our Reading book, such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Leah's Pony, The Three Javelinas, and  The Crowded House. It's amazing when the students can compare texts which we read in class to texts he or she sees in the classroom or at home.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Passover and can't wait to hear about Brian Dym's trip to Israel!

Inside the Classroom - 4th Grade

The fourth grade Judaics class continues to be very productive. In Chumash, we have been studying in Parashat Toldot about Rivkah telling her younger son Jacob to trick Isaac into giving Jacob the Bracha of the first born. Why would Rivkah try to deceive her husband Isaac? Why would Jacob go along with such an idea? How did they pull it off if Jacob and Isaac, although twins, were so different in looks and demeanor? How could Isaac be fooled so easily ? Why did Rivkah and Isaac have such a different perception of their two sons? These are among the questions which we have covered in Chumash recently.

We learned about Purim and its four "Mem" mitzvot. We studied some of the Megillat Esther, and some of the details of how the story of Purim has no miracles that are "jaw-dropping". We talked about all of the "coincidences" that just "happened" at the right time. Or was it really the hand of Hashem which placed all of those dominoes in the proper order?
Finally, we have been reviewing and going forward in our preparation for Pesach. Why are there four cups of wine at the Seder? Why do we have wine and not orange juice for the four cups? We all know that we break the middle Matzah to hide for the Afikomen. What is the Afikomen, and where does the word come from? Why don't we break the top  or the bottom Matzah? Do you know what Karpas is? Ask your fourth grader to spell it backwards in Hebrew and explain it to you.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Chag Kasher V'sameach.

Silver Academy Canned Food Drive A Huge Success

The Silver Academy students collected 451 food items for the Jewish Family Service (JFS) Food Pantry.  The Student Council officers, Anya Fox, president, Yael Muroff, treasurer, and Miriam Reed, secretary, delivered large boxes filled with a great variety of food products.  The students worked for a month to gather all the wonderful items that Jewish Family Service will use to provide the families who come to the agency for help with food.  This is the second annual pre-Pesach food drive held by the Silver Academy student council.  It is a win-win for everyone.  Families have the opportunity to clean their homes of chometz and JFS receives stock for the Food Pantry.
