Kindergarten Update
K on MLK day

On Monday morning, the Kindergarten class participated in school-wide activities for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Our fun filled day included, Bring a Friend to School,  Israeli dancing with Rak Dan, a presentation on Stranger Danger from Patrolman Jason Julseth of the Hampden Township Police Department, and  a short play about the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision.  With Mrs. Carpenter, they sorted art supplies that they had collected for a community breakfast program for families in need. Following a hot dog lunch with a special treat of ices, the class  took a trip to the Jewish Home to entertain the residents.  The children sang and danced for the residents and brought smiles to many faces.  After their performance, the children passed out pictures that they had drawn, and necklaces that they had made for each of the residents.  Both the children and residents were thrilled with the visit and they were invited back any time they want.    The visit was a true mitzvah, and everyone involved felt great about it.  We thank Erin Jacob, Jamie Boyd, and our nurse Cheryl Woren for driving us.

Tuesday through Friday, kindergarten celebrated Tu B'shvat by having a different colored cup of juice, eating a symbolic fruit, and discussing the symbolism of each as it relates to the holiday.  On Friday, the celebration will culminate with the planting of parsley seeds which we will grow for use during the Pesach seders.  We will also have found the time to learn the letter Hay and many new words that start with it.  We are certainly busy in Kindergarten and we wouldn't have it any other way!

Day of Service

On Monday, The Silver Academy students commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr., Day with a day of service and fun! Many students brought in friends for Bring a Friend to School Day and they had a wonderful time celebrating together. We started the morning hearing a presentation about the SACH program (Save a Child's Heart) that the students will be participating in during the month of February. Then, students broke out into sessions and did a variety of activities. Each grade had its own community service project.
  • The Kindergarten students created gift baskets to be given to Common Ground Cafe in Allison Hill.
  • The First and Second grades made bookmarks to be donated to the Harrisburg School District Library.
  • The Third Grade wrote Thank You Cards to the Firemen at the 6th Street Station.
  • The Fourth Grade wrote letters to military service men and women.
  • The Fifth Grade performed the play "Dreams can become Reality," a story about four friends and their dreams and how it relates to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • The Sixth Grade baked cookies and made gift bags to donate to "Our Daily Bread."
  • The Seventh Grade looked at petitions at www.change.org and debated what they would change.

The younger students also heard a presentation from Officer Jason from Hampton Township on Stranger Danger. Everyone had a chance to do Israeli Dance with Rak Dan and to create part of a Martin Luther King, Jr., mural. Click here to see a flyer with pictures from this wonderful day!

Attention parents!  Flu season is now in full swing and I want to just remind you to practice good hand washing techniques so your children will learn from your example.  Once again, the best way to stay healthy is to wash hands frequently.  Please read the following article from KidsHealth and share with your family.  As the side note states, 22 million school days were lost last year due to the common cold!

Why washing your hands is so important
