Cyber-Safety Presentation
Wednesday, February 22
PEC Library
9:15-10:15 a.m.

Keeping up with children and technology can seem like a losing battle, but together we can help one another stay on top of the latest in technology and continue to be the primary role model for our children. In order to help equip parents with vital information on this topic, we are bringing back Officer Eric Tamashasky from the St. Joseph County Police Department to speak to middle school students on cyber safety in today's world.

Parents are welcome to attend.

Saint Pius Students
Compete in Robotics Event

Congratulations to eighth grade students Jade O'Brien and Joseph Maffetone whose FTC robotics teams advanced to the state championship in Crawfordsville, Indiana on February 25.

FTC stands for FIRST Tech Challenge. FIRST is a robotics program where teams build and program robots, which compete with other robots. Jade's team is called The Fire Wires, out of GEARS in Granger. Joseph's team is called The Gas Attendants, located out of ETHOS Science Center in Elkhart.

Pictured are Jade and Joseph posing after the NorWestIN FTC Qualifying Tournament at Griffith High School in January. Jade's team won the Rookie Sensation Award and Joseph's team won the Motivate Award. Both teams performed very well and were picked to be on alliance teams in the finals.

The Fire Wires' alliance received the Winning Alliance Award and the Gas Attendants received second place for the Inspire Award. Best of luck at the state competition to both students and their respective teams!

Is My Child Having an Allergic Reaction?

When a child is experiencing an allergic reaction, symptoms typically appear within minutes to several hours after eating the food. Keep in mind that children may communicate their symptoms in a different manner than adults.

Some children, especially very young ones, put their hands in their mouths or pull or scratch at their tongues in response to a reaction. Also, children's voices may change (e.g., become hoarse or squeaky), and they may slur their words.
The following are examples of the words a child might use to describe a reaction:
  • "This food is too spicy."
  • "My tongue is hot [or burning]."
  • "It feels like something's poking my tongue."
  • "My tongue [or mouth] is tingling [or burning]."
  • "My tongue [or mouth] itches."
  • "It [my tongue] feels like there is hair on it."
  • "My mouth feels funny."
  • "There's a frog in my throat."
  • "There's something stuck in my throat."
  • "My tongue feels full [or heavy]."
  • "My lips feel tight."
  • "It feels like there are bugs in there." (to describe itchy ears)
  • "It [my throat] feels thick."
  • "It feels like a bump is on the back of my tongue [throat]."
If you suspect that your child is having an allergic reaction, follow your doctor's instructions and treat the reaction quickly.
