| POWER TO POTENTIAL RECAP | |
Power to Potential was held on Tuesday, November 6, at CityPlace. The day started off with the General Session that featured the WBCS 2012 Year in Review. Debbie Hurst, president of the WBCS, discussed the strategic direction of the Council in the next three to five years. The General Session ended with a celebration of our Done Deals™ Award winners.
The Momentum Award was presented to Texas Instruments with a 39% increase over last year in utilizing WBCS WBE suppliers. Terri Wright, Procurement Specialist Minority/Women Business Development Worldwide Procurement & Logistics, accepted the award and stressed the importance and value of using WBE suppliers.
The Women Working Together Award was presented to Ad-A-Staff and Abba Staffing snd Consulting. This award recognizes an outstanding Done Deal between WBCS WBE members. In 2011, Ad-A-Staff and Abba Staffing and Consulting discussed partnering opportunities. The idea was for Ad-A-Staff to serve as a subcontractor to Abba Staffing and Consulting to provide temporary personnel staffing to a WBCS Corporate Member. Abba Staffing and Consulting was awarded the contract. "The relationship that began with common goals as a prime contractor and subcontractor, developed into a business partnership I do not think any of us anticipated, nor is this partnership commonplace in our industry," said Darla Beggs, CEO of Abba Staffing and Consulting.
The Sustaining Champion Award was presented to Steve Meyer, Commodity Specialist for Texas Instruments. This award recognized an outstanding individual (executive, buyer or supplier diversity professional) employed by a Corporate (Sustaining) Member company, who was instrumental in securing business for a WBCS WBE. Janet Trompert, CEO of Talent 101, shared her story on how Steve guided her through the procurement process, to securing that "Done Deal".
Congratulations to our Award Winners!
Breakout sessions followed the General Session. We had a great lineup for our WBE audience, as well as our Corporate audience.
For our WBE audience:
- B2B is the way to BE! focused on the opportunities to do business with one another. WBE panelists shared their success stories and challenges in doing business with each other.
- Power through Partnering discussed the benefits of expanding your capabilities through alliances and the value of partnering with prime suppliers.
- Slay the Government Goliath! touched on how to do business with the government, the benefits and the pitfalls.
For our Corporate audience:
- Corporate Conversations Summit opened with a panel discussion on the successes and challenges of WBE engagement. After the panel discussion, the attendees broke up into smaller groups to share their experiences and learn from one another.
After the breakout sessions, the 42nd floor of CityPlace was a great backdrop for our networking reception.
Congratulations to our raffle winners:
- Cathy Dougherty, Dougherty Sprague Environmental won the Kindle donated by Pursuit of Excellence
- Jim Robertson, RSI Crating & Packaging won a $100 gift certificate donated by Brinker International
- Kem Sims, Analytical Food Laboratories won a $100 gift certificate donated by Brinker International
Thank you to our event volunteers for helping us make this event such a success!
