Minneapolis is poised to join San Francisco and Seattle in pursuing a goal of zero waste. As reported in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the city is considering a number of ordinance changes including a ban on foam takeout containers and a plan to pick up residential food waste.
Packaging technology advancements will be important. Officials say that to achieve zero waste, companies will have to use more recyclable and compostable materials, as well as using less packaging in general.
Zero waste is becoming part of the national conversation. WIST laboratory services can help packaging producers tap what looks to be a growing market for environmentally friendly materials. Our compostability testing evaluates materials to determine whether they meet ASTM standards for compostability. With IPS Testing of Appleton, WIST is certified by the Fibre Box Association to perform recyclability and repulpability studies on corrugated materials. And WIST is adding laminating and coating capability to the UW-Stevens Point pilot paper machine, which will open the door for research and development assistance for specialty paper suppliers.
And speaking of packaging innovation, this year's Focal Point conference will explore "packaging at the leading edge." Industry experts will discuss efforts to evidence sustainable sourcing of feedstocks, advances in production techniques, developments in specialty packaging materials, and end-of-life management challenges and choices. The conference is hosted by WIST and set for October 14 at UW-Stevens Point.
