Bio-on bones - who knew!
Broke my right arm at the age of 18, and a metal plate was screwed onto the radius ensuring the bone healed correctly. Had the bio-on application been in existence at that time it may have left me with one operation instead of four. Why four operations? Two weeks after the first plate was removed - second surgery - I broke the same right radius snowboarding because of micro-fractures from screws being removed. My orthopedist, looking at me with amazement in his eyes and disgust in his voice, told me "go home, let your scar and tendons heal, and then we will do this all over again." ADM and SAP...not software, but maybe a softer bottom with biobased super absorbent polymers
Not too long ago the biopolymers symposium allowed me to host an anaerobic digestion session. There we learned diapers aren't made with much cellulose anymore - they're mostly inorganics. Now it appears we may be moving back to mother earth with new carbon alternatives to soak up poopy messes. Oh baby; I'm excited. Thanks to the biopolymers symposium for giving us the heads-up: Read more at the Biopolymers 2013 website

Diapers have other needs too
Like staying on! With superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) we might as well have the elastic band get bio-ized (making up words like innovators creating new uses, but the words aren't as cool). This link from Sustainable Nonwovens brings us the news of BioAmber and BASF working - not together - to complete the diaper retransformation back to new carbon alternatives.

Shameless Plug - why not - Focal Point 2013: Frontiers in Packaging
Focal Point 2013: Frontiers in Packaging is right around the corner - October 22 - and if you haven't taken the time to look at the agenda - please do. Why, you ask? Let's start with NewPage's LitteFoot™ discussion, or Bemis talking flexible packaging. Maybe Green Bay Packaging discussion on paper sustainability is the catch, or, just maybe, Keller & Heckman - yes - discussion on FDA compliance is your thing. Whatever it is, if you are in paper and packaging, or use packaging in your operations, check out this line-up and register online: More information on the conference website
